Great to meet up at last, and so much to discuss!

Thanks to Martin for sorting out the venue.

Hi all

Reporting in as a 160 owner located in Surrey. Yellow & Ali, but that could be changing over the winter.

Would be great to meet up next time.

Hello James,

Great to hear from you, and interesting to note another 160 member. You would be welcome to come along to whatever we do next.

Was yours a kit or a factory build? How do you find it?

Good to be in touch, James. We may be a small bunch, but we're friendly, at least!

WIth your 160, you've taken the combined cc to over 4 litres!

Hi All,

My 160 was a kit build, polished aluminium and yellow with aeroscreen. However am thinking already about fitting a windscreen for winter months. Am tempted to fit aluminium wings and nose cone along with aluminium dash. May fit bench seats for that retro look along with brooklands screens.

only issue is DVLA  changing engine size as they entered it as 1660!

Hope to meet you all soon

Joined today - Can I be number 7 please?

Our 160 was built by Caterham.  Wish now I had built the kit.  I think it was the first they had built for a customer and it has had a few problems. We (wife and I) bought it via the Caterham Midlands base which then closed down without a word to us.  Caterham have tried their best and transported it to their HQ for the first annual service in October. Unfortunately, since then it has done more miles in their pick-up van than actually under its own power.  The engine kept cutting out, usually as I'm hurtling past a huge truck, and that is very scary indeed. Latest thought is that the ECU has lost its mind. We are looking forward to actually seeing 2k on the mileage counter.

Has any other 160 owner experienced similar? Shame because its a great little motor and the best drive I've ever had.

Hello!

Great to hear from another 160 owner. I would have thought that your problems should be OK to fix - the car is so simple and the engine and gearbox are common Suzuki parts.

NB before overtaking at speed you do have to get the revs up so that the turbo is in action. When I first had the car, I tried to put my foot down and overtake at low revs. In this situation the car tends to splutter, and you are left to meekly return. At high revs you get the whole turbo thing.

Keep us posted, and I look forward to meeting you at some stage.

Thanks for response.
However, what you suggest was not the problem, but a sudden completely dead engine at high turbo driven revs.
You certainly would think it would be a simple fix but Caterhams finest are trying to find and cure the problem and  hopefully when we get it back, we can begin to trust it again.

As I said, a great little car.

Hi there hampster,

I had a few problems during the build of my 160 and just couldn't get it started which really annoyed me but the car was picked up for its post build check and a new ECU was fitted and ever since i've not had any problems at all. I wonder if they have had a faulty batch?

Welcome to the club and I hope that your 160 is fixed soon.

Welcome hampster, and I hope you can get the car fixed asap and get on the road.

Despite the appearance, under the bonnet is very modern technology. Have you tried hooking up an ODB2 to the engine management computer? There's a small port by your right knee (possibly covered by a large circular rubber grommet). That should give a readout of any errors the ECU has spotted.

Best thing, of course, is to get Caterham to fix it, and honour the fact that you bought it from them (regardless of subsequent changes).

Post some pics of the car if you have a minute?

It would be interesting to see some engine bay pics too, to see if there are any differences.

and another 160 has arrived....

Black and ali 128 miles on the clock ( all done below 4000 rpm!)

Even at 60 mph in top gear it's still fun !!

Thanks 700newtons, and also thank you to you , NedK and Stallard68 for your build blogs which I found to be invaluable during  the build.

Hi Ben

I'm delighted you found the blog helpful!

Whereabouts are you based? In the spring, I'm sure we will arrange another get-together for 160 owners, and it would be good to see you there, of course.

All the best

Ned

Ned,

I live in Coventry, would be great to meet all the other owners, how many are there now in  this club within a club?

Welcome and it seems we are neighbours as I live in Rugby.  But don't hurtle over to compare cars as unfortunately our 160 is still living at Caterham HQ.  It was just about to be returned when the technician thought he would give it a last test and this time found that the sensor which monitors the air that comes in from the intake was not reading correctly.  They are awaiting a replacement sensor.

Sorry to moan on but do let us all know if any of you have a glitch from these infernal electronics.

Hi there Ben,

I'm so pleased that you found the blog usefull during you build and I'll look forward to meeting up with the rest of the gang when the weather improves.

Mike (nr wellsbourne so not far from you)

Me too, Simon!

Hamster, the mass air flow sensor is borrowed from a Renault Clio (part no 8200373771), in case they can't find one!

must be very frustrating for you hampster....(Due to a couple of errors (not mine) I had to wait an extra 2 months for my car)....but it'll be  worth the wait..

I'm sticking below 4000 rpm for the first 500 miles 'cause the handbook tells me to...am I being over cautious???

With three 160s around Warwickshire we could start a local chapter!!
