  1. The pump is usually fixed to the rear of the bulkhead behind the seats, usually to one side so that it's easy to get to if you take one of the rear wheels off. It's an easy job to replace. One thing to check first is that power is getting to the pump and also that the earth is ok. I've had a few things stop working due to poor earthing.

    Fitting horns

    Thanks Ian - job done.

    Fitting horns

Maybe be dumb question but.... I've got 2 sets of female blade connectors for the 2 horns. I had one Marco horn until last week when it broke which used one set of connectors - the other set were not used. Just got 2 new horns (high and low tone) from Caterham and they only have 1 blade connection on each horn - can somebody tell me how they are suppose to be connected - I'm at a bit of a loss. Thanks Tim
  4. I put a 6" repackable Powerspeed on my 1700SS. It replaced the original item that was producing 106db cold/104db warm. I'm now down to 98db. I also fitted a section of crushed perforated tube, which Powerspeed provided, in the end of the perforated tube in the silencer which made a 1-2db difference.

Purple with silver stripe going east on the A41 into Aylesbury at about 11.30ish. I was the green/yellow going the other way.

    Caterham on Ebay

It's de-dion which means long cockpit (unless someone has fitted de-dion to a short cock-pit). Don't understand why the owner doesn't fit.

    Caterham on Ebay

Terryp has been in contact with the seller (see his thread in Wanted section) and he does not appear that helpful. I'd go an look at it if you are serious. I've got a similar aged 1700SS and agree with the others that it looks a well speced example.
  8. Alex Finally got around to doing the carbs at the weekend. 150 miles today and no signs of any gunk. Thanks for the info. Tim
  9. Took the venturis out of my weber carbs today to do some work to try and stop them spitting. There was a "45" figure engraved on the venturi by the recess for the grub screw that holds them in place. Does this mean they are 45s - I've always assumed they were 40s. Tim
  10. Yes I'm sure - de-dions were only ever produced as long cockpits. Short cockpits, or standard cockpits as they were known at the time, were all live axle.
  11. Have you seen this? Being de-dion it's a long cockpit. No reserve so could be interesting to see what it goes for.
  12. Will Did you get my mail? Tim
  13. With £5,000 excess, would agree it's pointless. My insurance comes with the option of insurance for 4 track days per year instead of windscreen cover - Excess is £1000 or 10% value of the car whichever is the greater.
  14. On the subject of unsecured items - do up the passenger harness when driving so it does not flap around and bash you on the head Never use the handbrake when you stop after a run - take some chocks for the wheels As said above - don't underestimate the strain you are putting the car under - check everything regularly during the day and if you have recently done some work on the car double check it is ok.
  15. Free to anyone who wants them: Motorsport issues July 2005 to December 2009 (missing August 2007). Generally very good condition. They are a good read and the content doesn't date as it's mostly about the past. You can pick them up in Ealing or I can deliver in the M40 corridor between London and Oxford. Tim
  16. I'm just over 6ft 1inch and I only just fit in a long cockpit car with pre-Stype seats and no lowered floor. I have a shortened footwell on the passenger side and it's positively uncomfortable to be a passenger. So I'd hold out for a long cockpit. I've just done a search in the for-sale section on here with "1982 long cockpit" and "1983 long cockpit" - the searches came up with 2 cars - one in 2002 and one in 2005. ☹️ Edited by - MusCat on 12 Feb 2010 18:15:20
  17. The long cockpit was introduced in 1982, so it would be interesting to know how many (or few) were produced in the 2 years you are limited to. We are also talking 27-28 years ago, so how many are still around. You may be in for quite a lengthy search, but good luck.
  18. Extra tip or two You may need to tap the threaded boss to make the bolt go in easially. Don't go too deep with the tap as you'll push it through into the ali side skin. Also I bought a short bolt which I leave in the boss when I don't have the strut in to stop their being an unsightly hole in the inner side skin
  19. Cheers Alex . Just got to find the time to do it now.

    Hylomar

Hylomar has been suggested for sealing between venturi and carb body - which of their products is the one to use - Hylomar universal blue?
  21. Alex Thanks for the link to your previous post - in it you talk about Hylomar - what product exactly do you use? Tim
  22. My carbs on the 1700 xflow are producing a brown oily gunk that covers the filters, the bonnet and the top right hand side of the windscreen. Just badly adjusted carbs or is there likely to be another cause?
