  1. I have a mk V Golf 2.0 TDI. The car is 6 years old and running well. Recently a light came on the dashboard of an engine in yellow, with a message saying "consult emmissions workshop". The car was due an MOT and so I booked it in with a main dealer today for them to look at, and sort the MOT.

The car passed its MOT with no problems - including emmissions which I would take to mean that the engine is running pretty well given how strict the tests seem to be these days. However, the dealer called to say that the intake flap motor needed replacement as well as the cooling fans, at a cost of over £500 plus VAT!

The car continues to run smoothly and economically, and sits in traffic every day for my London commute, without the temp guage ever moving from the normal 90 degrees. Ie it shows no symptoms of what they are claiming to be wrong. When I asked to speak to a mechanic (the girl on reception did not know what she was talking about) he told me that they needed replacing because the fuse had gone. I asked if he had checked the components were faulty and he looked at me like I was simple and said that there was no need as they must be faulty or the fuse wouldn't have gone! I cannot believe this standard of service from a main VAG dealer. Does anyone have any experience of a similar problem, and is it likely to be a fuse in the main fuse box that I can relace myself?

Any help much appreciated, alongside recommendations of a good VW specialist in SW London.

  2. I agree with james. I made £1000 on my ax block xflow 2 years ago. Raceline did the instal, and it cost circa £4500 after I had deducted the sale of the xflow. I'm afraid I was tempted by a few extras like the new exhaust system and silicon hoses and it all adds up! I sold the xflow on ebay.
  3. Mark, I think that may belong to Barry in garage 61 - was that near where you found it? He was charging a video camera ISTR.

Thanks to Barry for his tips on how to drive Goodwood. I think I now know the theory. Just need to build up the speed!

A great day out, and plenty of good banter as promised!

  4. Thanks for the replies. One other question - Do the regs require the petty strutt to be in place on the latter Caged roll over bar? I have never needed it when competing in HSA events, and noticed this in the regs.

  5. I have a 2l zetec in standard tune, running on twin 40 DCOE carbs which I gather produces around about 160 bhp. Which class should this run in? Is it class 4?

Is anyone running a similar car in this class?

Thanks for your help in advance.

  6. I park in a private carpark and have noticed some oil on the floor below my diff. It is possible that another car has parked there and leaked oil, but I would like to check my diff oil level to be sure. It is an APsuretrac diff if that makes any difference?

  7. I have just had new brake pads fitted front (1144's) and rear (std pads). I know that they will take a few miles to bed in, but how long until my brakes improve in terms of peddle firmness and bite. Is there anything I should (or shouldn't) be doing to help the process along?

  8. I gather from previous posts that 1144 pads work well for a road going seven. Should I change the pads front and rear, or is it just the fronts that should be done? I have standard brakes & pads all round at present.

Also, who makes the 1144 pads?

  9. I sold mine on ebay in May for £980. That was without twin 40's (retained) or the exhaust which I sold for £200.

My engine had done 23k, did not burn or leak oil and was totally standard. That it was in good order seemed irrelavent as the guy was going to rebuild it as a real screamer.

I would recommend selling the carbs and exhaust seperately.

You will not regret going zetec *thumbup*
