  1. I have a very sick 1600 XF and the engine needs to come out and after a lot of thought I have decided to stick with the engine and have it rebuilt by Vulcan. I have two questions and would appreciate some advice. Q1:- Do I go for a 135BHP or 145BHP upgrade its only £150.00 difference the starting price for the 145 is £1799.00 or £1649.00 for the 135bhp without extras Q2:- How easy would it be for me to remove the engine myself, bearing in mind I have a normal height garage (Would I have enough room for a crane) Or do I save up some more pennies and give it to JW Ralph 1600XF soon to be 1700XF
  2. Thank Guy's for all the help After doing the pres test again as per Rogers instructions and doing the wet test with the oil. The conclusion is that No 2 looks like it needs new rings. Before wet test No 2 was down to 90psi Add oil and it went up to 130 psi
  3. Thanks again Guy's I will re do test and try the oil thing as well. If the oil makes a difference and it is the rings, I take it that would be the worst scenario. Engine and credit card out.
  4. Thanks again guys As per Rogers comment the test was done warm but not with the throttle fully open. I guess I will do the test again after tying up the throttle. I did not realise you had to have it open. (or did not remember, Its been a long time since I played with engines) I hope this makes a difference.
  5. Hi GJT I am near to the Penn meeting, keep meaning to get there but somthing always needs doing on the car or something else gets in the way. If I can do the work on the engine without removing it from the car I will do myself. If the engine has to be removed I will have to farm it out somewere, (don't know were)? As I don't have a lift or the room, I have a bench and Pit and some tools but thats it. Also should the test be done cold or warm or both? Ralph
  6. Thanks for all the input guy's I am curious as regarding Deitys comment about oil being thin. Would new oil (ie somthing like Mobil 1 15/50) make any difference to the compression and by the way the test was done with a warm engine. Should I have done the test cold? I discovered this noise when I changed the coolant and judging by the crud that came out of the cooling system, the oil could be in the same condition. Ralph
  7. Hi Terry 1996 1600 XF Sprint Originally an academy car (The 1st owner) Wet sump, does not seen to be blowing smoke but plugs are very black Ralph If you need any more info I may be delayed (just got called into work) Ralph
  8. Bought a 1600 XF this year (My first Caterham) After taking care of rust and a few other bits. I now think I have a major problem with the Engine which rattles a lot. I did a compression test and got the following 1 - 115 psi 2 - 157 psi 3 - 120 psi 4 - 157 psi From this i take it something is a wrong as the previous owner got 197 psi on all 4 ANY IDEAS ON WHAT MY OPTIONS ARE Fed up new x-flow owner
  9. Wheels now sold to the man in Southampton

  11. 4 Minator Wheels for Sale fitted with Yokhama’s 185/60R13 80H A008Rwhich look like the have been used on the track but still look like they are good for some more track days. I have just bought my 1st Caterham 1600 X-Flow Live Axle which the wheels fit; they came with the purchase of the car along with a few other extras. The wheels look very good to me if not perfect, I am looking for about £185.00 if that sounds reasonable (Can e-mail photos if required) and buyer would have to arrange collection.

    Caterham Wanted

Thanks for the interest Matt I did look at this one but I am not sure that the Tillet seats would be comfortable for longer blats and also being a newbie the Q plate thing worries me a bit. Ralph

    Caterham Wanted

Wanted a Clean Tidy Caterham any colour but green. I would consider anything between £8,000.00 & £11,000.00 and preference would be a 1700 Supersprint but would consider anything within my budget and not to far away from the Bucks and Berks area as time away from home and work is difficult until the end of April.
  16. Thanks for pointing this out you are correct I have posted this in the wrong area as Del Boy would say wot a plonker. I will re post in Wanted As I understand Penn’s meet last Sat every month wont be able to do Feb but will be in March.
