  1. Bec has just heard that she has been awarded a 5 year Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship to continue her research work at Sheffield - we are all rather pleased!!

  2. Got the mended car back today. Not too much damage in the end - an inlet valve cap had broken (cleanly snapped in half) and dropped / bent an inlet valve and broke/cracked the guide. A bit of the broken guide was ingested into the next inlet port but luckily got stuck in the valve, damaging that one too.
Head now all rebuilt / refreshed with uprated valve caps, just in case!

Very good service from McMillan Motorsport in Hinckley.

    Roll on Loton!

  3. I have often thought, from a sprinting point of view, I would be better replacing the passenger tillet seat with a smaller bucket type seat without a built in head rest. It might give a cleaner airflow over the passenger side tonneau (particularly as I only run with an aeroscreen on the drivers side)

    just a thought ......

  4. Need a new helmet for this season. Has anyone any ideas about the shelf life of the various helmet standards? The Blue Book has some validity dates for Snell standards, but there aren't any for FIA 8860-2010 or FIA 8859-2015.

Engine update - valve cap had failed, dropping an inlet valve. Valve bent and broke a small piece off the guide which was drawn into another cylinder inlet and got wedged in the valve.
2 new inlet valves + set of upgraded valve caps needed. Car currently with McMillan for repair/head refresh and suspension setup check.

Looking forward to the new season.

  5. from the Boston in Auckland - just  returned from watching the fireworks on the Sky Tower from the top of Mount Eden.

Bad news is we return home tomorrow :(

.........and no money left to repair the car!!

  6. Haven't dared looked yet!

Will probably take the head off myself and if just valve damage, take the car to McMillan to have it repaired and put back together.

To remove the head, is there any particular order to removing bits eg is it best to remove the manifolds first or can they be removed on the bench etc. Are there any particular pitfalls to avoid? Head nuts - any particular loosening order?

  7. Have connected the BJ trailer to the new car (Octavia) via a 12 to 7 pin adaptor for the trip over to Anglesey tonight, but the 3 offside trailer lights are only working intermittently. When they are working, there are sparks from the breakaway cable connection on the car (which is on the plate the socket is on, on the car )

The nearside lights work perfectly all the time which makes me think is isn't an earth problem.

I have checked the  plug on the trailer and it all seems fine.

I have just connected the trailer to the Landrover, and the lights work fine.

The electrics on the car were fitted by the dealer.

    Any ideas?

  8. I was thinking that something like that might be the solution, but wasn't sure if it was something BJ would recommend. Clearly they do! With the long trip to Anglesey next weekend, I was hoping to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Photos would be useful if possible.

    Thanks

    Paul

Have just hooked up the BJ Clubman (with car on) to the new Octavia. Nose weight is ok, but the trailer is is no where near level - rear wheels of trailer are clearly taking more load than the front ones. The tow bar on the car is a removeable one, so no chance of fitting a drop plate (I assume).

What are the options to get it to tow level? (or does it not really matter)

    Thanks

  10. 21 meals  booked tonight.

When I said I was covering the £100 deposit myself, he took pity on me and said he would do it without the deposit - what a nice man!

However, it does mean that if people don't turn up, they might get charged.

    TV/Rugby:

The TV area in the pub is in another small bar away from the dining room. However, they do have wi-fi and are happy for us to bring a laptop that could sit on the (unused) bar in the dining room - has anyone the facility to stream it live?

    See you next week.

  12. Right then....

Have talked to Oli and decided to go for the Crown at Aberffaw. Have talked to the landlord tonight and they can do us at 8.00pm.

There are now 22 on the list and they can handle a max of 22 in the dining room (we are all friends right?)

I need to confirm the booking by tomorrow, and will have give a deposit of £5 per person , so I need to know quickly whether everyone is still interested in coming.

They also need us to pre-order the meals so they can serve us together.

The Mains prices are up to £9.95.

1 Breaded chicken breast, fries etc £8.95

2 Steak and Ale pie, fries etc £9.95

     3 Chilli rice / chips £8.95

4 Beef burger with bacon and cheese and fries £9.95

He will email me the starters menu tomorrow and I will put it on here.

Please confirm ASAP  (before tomorrow 6.00 pm ) if you DON'T want to come as I don't want to be out of pocket,

For those coming, I will need your order before the weekend (I will keep a list to avoid fights!)

    Thanks  Paul

  13. The Crown at Aberffaw (2.5 miles from the circuit) seems to have some very good ratings on Trip Advisor.

I have just rung and they can seat up to 22 people in their dining room. If we got around that number, we could have exclusive use of the dining room.

We would need to pre-order from their menu and give them a deposit.  They would need the booking confirmed within a few days.

  14. 12 volt system, with charging from 2 solar panels. (panels off when pd measurements taken)

Used at Gurston at the weekend, but battery supply was a bit iffy - pd dropped significantly over night, causing fridge to stop working.

I suspect is it the battery at fault, but not sure how to do a definitive test.

  15. Have just charged my van leisure battery. With no load, it pd across it is now 14.7 volts. When drawing a couple of amps, it was still 14.5 volts.

    Any ideas?

    Time for a new one?

    Thanks for any thoughts!
