  1. I had a local company in Ipswich called Demand Engineering/Longlife Ipswich add some pipework and a rear silencer to the already excellent Powerspeed system I had, as well as repack the Powerspeed silencer using their materials and techniques.

Powerspeed 24" x7" side silencer by itself was 97dB, with Acousta-Fil Boa inside 94dB and now with the DE-repacked Powerspeed silencer and rear silencer it is 89dB, all at just over 5000rpm on a 230bhp 1.9K. I found that static tests were never a problem with the Powerspeed system alone. Just when barely thinking about using the loud pedal, I got chucked off the circuits.

Cost was an incredibly reasonable £300 for a morning's work. Here's my trackday heap:

PS. Demand Engineering did the manifolds and exhaust system for Guy Martin's Transit van in the latest Speed series. I tell everyone this because I'm proud of the top-notch local companies in East Anglia that appeared in the programme.

  2. Seeing as you're in Kent, try Boss Racing down at Brands Hatch. I'm sure I've mentioned Boss to someone on Blatchat recently, it may have been yourself. Can't remember!

  3. I had some mad brake judder through the wheel once. Turned out to be a loose lower wishbone rear fixing. Replaced the lot with new nylocs. Never a problem since. Bit of an unlikely cause of brake judder, but there is an outside chance nonetheless.

  4. Edit: either sort of coolant temp gauge will do now!

Does anyone have a fully working one of these they'd like to get rid of, please? It's Caterham part numbers 71229 or 71251, with CATERHAM lettering. The fixing brackets and bits and pieces would be useful of course.

  5. Really hard to describe with words! There's so much room with the primaries loosened right off that I just put all the primaries into the collector roughly and then "twist and push" the silencer/collector. It doesn't take much effort until the primaries go all the way into the collector and the silencer brackets line up with the bobbins. I recall an earlier thread of yours; how did you fit it all the first time round?

  6. I'm selling my Decibel Slayer as I've now got a permanent, quiet solution to my noisy car problem. I got chucked off Brands GP by 11am on a day there in June earlier in the year so had to buy this gadget to drop the static test result by 3 dB to have another stab at continuing the day. Don't get me started on the validity of static noise tests in relation to noise emitted under heavy load!

Some blurb on them on the JJC website:

    http://www.jjcraceandrally.com/autograss/exhaust-silencers/decibel-slayer-the-decibel-slayer-bolt-on-exhaust-noise-decibel-reducer-insert

JJC price is just over £70 plus delivery. I paid £70+VAT=£84 for mine in an emergency from the helpful chaps at Sevens and Classics. Two of the long bolts I've replaced with dome heads as I damaged the other two by grounding them down.

    £SOLD!

  7. Selling a couple of bits on behalf of a member who is unable to post at the moment.

First up is a set of new pads for old-style Caterham/AP 4-pots, supplied originally by Caterham. They are believed to be Mintex 1202s and the standard-issue race pad at some point. Pictures here and here. £25

Also, some new Sparco soft knit nomex ankle length socks. They are unworn but do not come with any packaging. Size M (42-43) approximately UK 8-9. Picture here. £10 inc. delivery

  8. I've got a mate interested in the full set, but he's down south though and would like more details of them; amount of tread left according to the "pimples", compound, age etc. etc.
