  1. IIRC in old days on blatchat there was extensive discussion on front numberplate size.  I believe it was thought a correctly sized plate - particularly with a gurney "flap" underneath - could provide a bit of downforce to reduce understeer.

  2. I bought rubber Well Nuts (M5) from Probolt as cheaper than Rawl-? which weren't readily available locally.

They worked ok but at least one of the rivnuts pulled out leaving a larger hole so the well nuts fell in. I was going to try bonding the Well Nuts in place but ran out of time.  It's likely the car will be re-skinned in near future.

  3. My ex-Academy car has a Brake Bias valve but the lever (which I was told to leave forward) is very floppy ie can be moved forward or back without any resistance.

Need to investigate further (car not in use at the moment) but intend to keep for authenticity.

  4. I replaced the Vecta with a Toad Powerkey last year.  It's not the sort of task I would attempt myself and a professional fitter did the job for about £160.  Removing and replacing the scuttle was the worst part.  The new unit makes dealing with stop-start traffic a lot easier as you don't have to keep removing the ignition key (to trigger the immobiliser) each time you want to restart.  Main reason for changing was liklihood we would get stuck somewhere on the continent when the Vecta failed.  I read before about ECR's experiences and knew I'd have no hope of that sort of fix.

  5. The previous owner of my car fitted a newly-fabricated English axle at quite great expense.

Sadly it was pretty hopeless.  There was no brace and a split A-Frame mount meant it leaked oil in quite a big way.  Furthermore, failure to remove the old bumpstops didn't help handling. (Oh, and oil used to centrifuge into the nearside wheel due to bearing issues).

Thankfully James Whiting was able to put together a properly engineered replacement which (touch wood) has been completely trouble free.

  6. For "Screw - Windscreen Assy/Stanchion" (silver) it's "M5 C/sunk".

The remaining originals I have look to be a bit chamfered and possibly plated but I will change all to match.

  7. Any idea of stanchion to screen screw sizes and is it a standard countersunk?

    (I lost one years ago).

On another fastener issue,  just changed out the pedal box cover screws.  The standard ones seem a bit soft.  When we had a problem in Genoa last year I couldn't loosen with screw driver and ended up using pliers.  Just bought stainless socket head cap screws at £2 odd for 50 (from Screwfix)  So got some spares available....

  8. Good question.  I've been meaning to replace mine as those that also hold the Master Switch Eyebrow are Philips head and have become badly burred (following a number of screen removals).  Need to check length now.

  9. Hi Paul

Best of luck with the brakes.

We took our 1800 8v to the L7 Italy meet at Portofino last year.  It suffered a broken spigot bearing which made changing gear difficult.  Am hoping it'll be trouble free when we head back down next month.

Main problem is lack of luggage space in a live axle car.

  10. Go for it.

I loved and still miss mine.

One of my greatest 7 memories is starting up the x/f first thing in the morning in the garage.  That noise....

You get used to the under-dash handbrake.  Just need some fancy footwork.
