Just been to the biggest Ford Dealer in the area.  As usual the starting point was "Have you got the CG (V5)"  i explained it would not be much use.  I showed him the picture from the E-Bay page with the Ford number and he at least did a good search of the system but the computer said NO.  I explained what the car was and the various old Ford cars that might have th right part ie early Escort, Capri but nothing.  He tried to explain that the car should have come with a parts catalogue  

At leats he took my number and said he would make some calls tomorrow to see what he can find.

It says they are on vacation at the moment so not taking orderss.

The car seems to be behaving at the moment and dont have any big excursions planned so will wait til they are back and order one then

Thanks Jonathan, I did try a Google search in fact that is where i got the image from.  The problem is that when I have gone to the next stage they seem to go to plastic caps or thangs that I am not sure are thhe same.  I tried Burton Power and nothing is obviously the same, I was looking fro a Ford verison of Rimmer brothers where I could eee the part and buy it.

I have tried a local Ford garage but the boy there had no idea what I was talking about when I started to explain it was from an old Escort or Capri.

Can anyone recommend a good source for a replacement radiator cap for a 1700 SS crossflow.  I rather stupidly was inspecting mine and managed to damage the rubber seal.   I went to a motor factor in Paris who was very helpful but finally only able to find something that looked like a cheap version. It fitted ok but yesterday I  was out for a blat and after giving it some beans it spat water out through bonnet vents.  

Just been doing a couple of jobs on the car and I have found that the drill set I have is next to useless. I ended up raking through an ods and sods box to find some discarded drills to do the job.

Looking for recomendations for a drill set for cutting steel.  No need for wood or masonry drills.

Hi, no sign of a groove on the thread.  As suggested I found a suitable fibre washer at local bricolage shop.  Not the same outer diameter but sufficient to cover the flat turned are under the head.

Thanks guys, It is a large Hex headed Plug not a switch.  I will try the plumbing hardware route

Went out for a blat to versailles on Sunday.  It was extremely hot +35deg.  On the way home my horn fell off.  Taking the nose cone off to investigate the horn problem I noticed that the seal under the large Hex nut on the Radiator was seeping.

Any one Know the part number or the dimensions of what I expect is a fiber washer to suit?

The car is a 1700SS X-Flow.

Visited The Royal Mews yesterday and spotted a 7 shaped vehicle under a full cover parked in the main square.

Waahooo I might have got my 1st Spotted although there was another in the same area. I am on French plates which is  a bit of  giveaway.

Interesting comments.  I did not clarify in this thread but the engine in question is a 998cc Classic A series Mini engine.  It is my other project to stop me playing too much with the X-Flow

Job sorted.  Good excuse to buy a new tool, ie a big torque wrench with same scales as small one. (Halfords Proffessional).  Dry bolts and nuts.  Clicked into place just nice.

yes torque to a limit in 2 steps.

Just wondered if there was some special process in the head gasket compression process

The engine document state torque to be applied in the correct sequence in 2 steps.

My question:  Is there any possible risk associated with doing it in more than 2 steps?

It is a couple of years old and have never had it calibrated. 

Is there a simple method to do a calibration in a domestic environment? 

I think the route cause could be oil on the studs.

Data on The Mini Forum confirms the lower torque setting so I have posted a question to confirm the error in the Haynes manual.

Wow thanks Elie,  I was about to reply "I know what the torque should be" but looking at the dat ain that chart the Torque is a about 10 Ibs/ft lower than what it says in my Haynes manual. 

Will now go off to my Mini forum and ask some question there.

I am currently working on my Mini project and rebuilding the engine.

I have already had one disaster as had a brain fart in setting my big torque wrench and sheared a stud flush with the top of teh block.  Nightmare to remove.

So yesterday I was back to the point of doing up the head bolts.

Did the initial stage at a low level then went to the next step and all was looking good however when i went to the final torque the nut just kept turning without any increased resistance and it was uncomfortably past the point where I would expect a click.

So I think some thing is really wrong and almost certainly will have to take the head off and get new bolts and head gasket again.

The only thing I can think of is that the studs may not have been oil free and that prevented the nuts from achieving the torque.

Anything else to be aware of before I go at it again?

Not sure she would want to re-enact the exams as there was a certain amount of stress involved.

I have suggested to here that with modern multi track recording and editing she could almost generate her own orchestral sound by layering all the instruments into one piece.

The results are in, 6 Merits and 4 Distinctions. Total raised for Bowel Cancer UK £ 4,500.
