  1. CC is selling several rear brake items:

     

    A "Race" caliper, here

     

    And a vented disc, here

     

    Clearly there is weight savings but is there any increase in braking performance compared to the standard 'uprated' brakes? Iow, are they worth the dough?

     

    2ndly, I'm changing pads. Topic has been covered to death but just the same I'm soliciting opinions on the ultimate performance pads for track use. I've got the AP 'Caterham' badged 4 pot calipers up front and the uprated calipers at the rear. I've had some issues w/ the rears locking and I'd love to see that go w/out installing a balancing valve (even though I probably should). The car sees very little duty on the road so no reason to compromise.

  2. How will you handle the seat harnesses? Photo indicates that you'll lay them over the top, perhaps after trimming the seat edge.

  3. standard pistons and rods on the R400 duratec I believe. And no roller TBs; there's a single plenum chamber.

     

    A single plenum chamber? I haven't ever seen the R400 so I don't know what Caterham do to get 210 hp but in the early days of Duratec that meant TBs & cams.

     

    Theoretically (if nothing inside is broken / bent) you should be able to transfer all the good bits (intake system, cams, sump, lightweight clutch / flywheel if it has them, etc.) to a donor and away you go. I did this when I popped an oil ring - a low mileage junkyar... er, reclaiming yard engine cost me $750. I moved all of the good parts from the smoker to the new. It fired up 1st try, no remapping required, and runs essentially identically to the original (knock wood).

     

    You may want to switch to an 80 deg. C thermostat while you're at it. 😬

  4. An expert's view on the expected tyre life when stored in the dark on a low weight car would also be interesting.

     

    I recently re-mounted a set of ACB10s on wheels after about 2 years sitting in the dark in a shed attached to my garage. I'd put them in opaque garden bags. The tires are somewhere around 3 - 4 years old. They don't seem to have suffered at all in terms of grip, or in any other way for that matter.

  5. Thanks for that Paul. I'll pass the info about the strengthening along to Jon. As long as he's got to do some work he might as well do it all. He's had nothing but trouble this year.

     

    W/ CC now offering a high HP engine w/ a sequential option, I wonder if they've thought about this mode of failure. After all, the new R500 is little different than Jon's 250 +/- hp. Add some slicks and one would be in the same arena.

     

    Edit: A Norcal shop shows a hoop on their website and I believe they installed them in their race cars. I don't think they were ever, um, tested however.

    No, it's the mount for the remote shock thingies. Suffered a bit it did.

    Roger: Jon said it was new, replaced prior to the start of the year. It had only done only 4 or 5 track events, perhaps a grand total of 100 minutes. Jon usually only hops on track long enough to get a good time - 3 or 4 laps per session most, sometimes less. This seems shock-load related & Jon has mentioned to me that he still isn't perfect w/ the sequential. Magnus theory that the drivetrain is essentially a direct connection between engine and tires seems plausible. How are sequentials implemented in your neck of the woods?

     

    Edit: Roger, you and Barbara have fun over there in France. We sorely wish we would have been able to join you. Work and events precluded that - bah.

  9. We can get 100 and 110 at the tracks I frequent (edit: right out of the pump), and there's a normal gasoline station that sells 100 not too far away in Pasadena. All of it is pretty dear, at least relative to 'normal' gasoline, and relative to the price you all are paying now. *eek*

  10. When I have time I'll drive to Emerald in my car and swap the bodies to see what happens. There is another 2 litre that is on the bench at the moment that is being prepared for racing that was originally a cooking engine fitted with 45's. Will do a back to back on the flowbench and the dyno with that too. 45's against 54's. Should be interesting.

    Your compatriots should like the 54mm / 2.125" throttle bodies. Yanks like big stuff don't they?

  11. Be interesting to try them on a ported standard valve Duratec head like I have on my own 2 litre engine which has 35 mm inlets and 30 mm exhausts. Maybe another trip to Emerald soon?

  12. Avon slicks have a rotational direction

     

    I've been using them like ACB10s, w/ the numbers facing right at the rear and left at the front. Don't know how much this matters to be honest.

     

    Torque wrench advice is spot on imo.

     

    For sure you'll notice a little bit of difference in grip between the 500s and slicks. That much I do know about 😬

  13. Front end tucks behind the trailing edge opf the scuttle

     

    Joachim didn't tell me that when I got mine. I'll have to give that a look. Who knew?

     

    I've attached mine w/ velcro all around. The tape looks pretty stupid when the doors aren't on the car but they won't budge otherwise.

    Edit: Next question: Does anyone know the part number for the pilot bearing for the input shaft at the rear of the crankshaft? Or alternately, where one can be sourced?

     

    I've measured it to be 15mm ID x 22mm OD.
