  1. Unless the car is having regular 24hr races I can't see that disconnecting the speedo makes much difference to mileage and value. I am intrigued as to why it should be disconnected - too distracting?
  2. By the way, Caterham have several speedos on their spares site that are around £250-£300 so might have what you want. The one I have looks to be the 2005 onwards stepper motor version. Link is https://caterhamparts.co.uk/41-gauges
  3. I have a speedo that was given to me and if it suits I can send to you. It was given to me by a guy who found it and lots of other bits when Caterham left their original site in a rush - he gave all of them to a local Caterham owner but missed this. Looks identical to yours and attached photo shows the back. No idea if it works and no charge if you want to take a punt on it, just postage.
  4. It's taken 2 weeks but DVSA have just emailed to say that my application has now been accepted for assessment - hopefully not too long before they say I can book and pay for a test at Leighton Buzzard which is where I selected in the end. I had planned to take Tyraps and tools (thanks Tom and Richard) but the suggestion to have a support vehicle and person, whilst obvious, is not one I considered but I think I will do that too. I will also aim to give the brakes and engine a workout for the emissions and brake tests.
  5. Thanks BigCol. That's a good tip about having the manual online which I have just had a skim through - it provides quite a lot of clarification. Colin
  6. Thanks Chris. Norwich is a 2 1/2 hour drive and although it is a very nice drive, if I fail then the 2 1/2 drive home and a repeat journey is perhaps a bit more than my nerves could handle :). Gillingham would be either taking half of the M25 or going through London or it's suburbs - neither would be good. I think I will sign up for Leighton Buzzard unless someone comes back with a recent scare story. It's also a very enjoyable 40 minute A and B road journey for me to get there.
  7. Thanks for the feedback Steve. I was hoping that every centre would be as professional and helpful as you experienced. Although Caterham suggest Gillingham or Nottingham as being more familiar with our cars, the outcome should be the same. The documentation is a concern for me based on the fact that that the pre-filled form from Caterham has many incorrect details including those for the engine, weights, descriptions and wrong boxes ticked. Another small setback along the bumpy (but enjoyable) Caterham self-build road!

    Wheel torque

I have been fortunate to own a number of new cars and each one has had a small amount of lubrication on the wheel studs/nuts or bolts from new. I don't know what they use but can say that whatever it is it lasts for years, and if you have your car serviced regularly then the manufacturer's advice is correct. On other cars I've fixed which had no or almost no lubrication I applied a small amount of oil or copper slip and then wipe it - a completely dry thread is not going to be a good idea. Below is a link to an interesting video but I suggest jumping to 2 mins and stopping at 5 mins as although I agree with him and think he is a competent and honest engineer, he is usually rather non PC and a bit Marmite.
  9. I am about to apply for my Caterham's IVA test and I'm equidistant from these two test centres. Leighton Buzzard would be preferable as it's an easier, more predictable journey but I have not seen many recent (last 5 years) reviews and older ones are rather negative. Any experience of either test centre gratefully received. Thanks
  10. There is a red 40th Anniversary car being auctioned at the London Classic Car Show, with only 6,247 miles and it looks to be in fantastic condition. https://www.historics.co.uk/buying/auctions/2023-25-02/cars/ref-87-caterham-super-7-40th-anniversary-ebs/ It is expected to go for £13k-£17k and if I was not building my own 170S I would be very tempted!
  11. HI, I will take these please if still available. Thanks, Colin
  12. Hi Jonathan, I'm new to the site having ordered a 170. I just sent you a PM requesting a 160 or 170 manual, but had a message that it wasn't delivered as your inbox was full. Being new I might be getting things a bit wrong of course! Thanks, Colin
