  1. The best unit is the Sure Shift II at www.sureshift.com. The are an option on most new Caterhams. On the Caterhams they are preprogrammed with the shift points. The sure shift 2 has many feature including capturing RPM averages as well as as close to a formula one type engineering an be. It has a ground, switched positive (like a radio hook up) and a wire that goes to the Tach, Coil, or any other ign ition area where you get a pulse. My unit was default for 4 cylinders and I had it programmed (and mounted) and running through the streets. There are many wasy to set it up so it suits your needs Just email Julian at the website. He is very helpful Richard Gibson
  2. I have One of these on my Crossflow motor. Not being 100% knowledgable about them I will describe it. On my motor when it is out of the car the sump pan (made of aluminum) is so square that the motor stands solidly on the ground due to the absolute squareness of it. It looks like it gave my car more clearance on the road by 2-3 inches. I have a friend with a Marcos with a crossflow who needs one for his car very badly. So,I am looking for a used 'james whiting type' oil pan in usable shape hopefully with the oil pick-up from the motor (I assume it is different) You can email me at: Barcorebar@aol.com Richard Gibson
  3. Andy, Where did you get your Leda's. I am from washington DC USA, and I was in the UK last February a year ago and saw them at James Whitings shop. He was super nice there and I bought a few odd and ends. But a few months later I emailed him about getting some for me twice and I got no respose, so I was wondering who you got them from and a name of someone to deal with. A phone number would be good too. How much did they set you back? Have you got them on now and what do you think of them compared to the old shocks (what were they) Thanks a ton Richard Gibson Washington DC.
  4. I have used 8x20/13 on a Spitfire set up for sprints only and it had goodyear, then I switched to Hoosiers. What a difference. Plus the way they were designed it put 2" of more rubber on the road than the Goodyears. Hoosier does make a quality product. How many miles are you getting on your set of hoosier street legal tires? Or an estimate? I Currently have BF Goodrich Comp T/A R1 which are the stickiest tyre I can get in the USA. I had the O32r 's on my Elan and the BFG are mush better. I would like to get a set of Avon ACB10's for the street. But I can't find out how many miles I will get out of them. Richard Gibson Washington DC
  5. I am sorry I don't have the necessary width in the rims I have 7". I think that is a bit to narrow? Richard
  6. Thank you for all the help in this area. Id does sound like a bit more than an easy swap for sure. I notice many of you mention defferent first gear 'ratios', I was under the impression that changing those you ended up with a straight cut 'noisy' box. I don't want that. I wish I could put my old elan box in there. Or are there any other 4 speed boxes that will mate up. As one mentions. I have the bellhousing and tranny in one piece. So are there any other box options that are 4 speed? Thanks Richard Gibson Washington DC I bought a LSD from SPC....Steve is the tops.
  7. I have an 85' Caterham LC Supersprint. I recently upgraded my motor to 150hp crossflow. Now I find even more that first gear has come and gone way to quick. I have a friend who bought a 5 spd box from SPComponents and loves it. With them you can pick out your own gearing to a degree. Are there any other people who sipply boxes for the crosflow?? Also, what mods are serious. Propshaft (easy) Make new tranny mount (I have no Idea on this one, but there seems to be alot of area to work with???) Are there any boxes by name I should avoid/or to look for?? Any and all advice welcome? Many thanks, Richard Gibson Washington DC, USA
  8. Am I to assume that these are the bolt pattern 4.25 versus 3.75??? Richard Gibson
  9. What size rims were you running them on? Also would shipping to the USA by UPS be too much of a haggle. Richard Gibson Washington DC USA
  10. I have just installed an MSD ignition system which provides a Tachometer send. Which I hooked up to. I replaced the Lucas System. My car is an 85 Caterham Super Sprint. This is what happens. When I accelerate and reach somewhere in the vicinity of 6000RPM the tach needle drops back down to ZERO. When I lift off, the tach springs back into action. Any ideas? Another source on where to hook the Tach send? I must mention that I have a SureShift2 Sequential Shift light system which works fine. www.sureshift.com I have completely disconnected unit and it makes no difference to my problem. My problem started with the MSD 6AL ignition system. Any help would be very welcome! Richard Gibson Washington DC USA
  11. I have had very extensive experience with the OO32R. I am here in the USA and we only have one compound available to us. I think I heard there are softer tires to be had over towards you. I ran them in an Elan and found them to be a bit noisy, superior in the wet, very good in giving you feedback but I am sure there are better tires to be had for the 7. 12. Talk to Steve at SPComponents in Redditch. I had him do my LSD. He know Ital axles very well 01527 894232 Richard Gibson Washington DC
  13. Thank you for the thoughts of us all in the USA. I live about 10 minutes from the Pentagon is. I hear the boom, but it did not strike me as being something to worry about. There is only a mile apart from the one Reagan National Airport and the pentagon. So I am used to hearing plabes and loud noises all the time. Back to the car problem. I bought the motor from a chap in the UK, transported it here, installed it, started it up and I did not even have to adjust the carbs synch or RPM level. It ran perfect from the get go. And has ran perfect until this right hand turn problem. The carb's themselves have less than 5K miles on them and have the plastic floats. I have lowered the fuel level (by adjusting floats) and the only good thing I accomplished is that it will start missing a little later into the turn, but were talking a 5% improvement. I do have the mechanical fuel pump and plastic floats. Any othe Ideas? Richard Gibson Washington DC, USA
  14. My car has a 1700 crossflow with twin DCOE45's. It has run fine forever, but now all of a sudden when I take a hard/medium right hand turn it starts to miss. Flood? It also feels like a plug lead has fallen off. The electrical system is not likely the problem. As soon as you come off the turn, you can bury the throttle forever and not have it miss again until a right hand turn. Left hand turns. No Problem. I assume this is something easy, but after having 10+ Lotus cars, I have never had any Weber troubles. Lucky me. Any Suggestions? Many thanks in advance. Richard Gibson Washington DC, USA
  15. In regards to the shiftlight system. I bought mine from Aces. The Sure Shift 2 is a complete user friendly system that is 100% programmable where the R500 unit has fixed shift points. Caterham did much research before choosing the shift light for their cars. You ca also reach them at: www.sureshift.com Richard Gibson 85 Caterham Spint
