  1. Thanks ric355 for the very comprehensive write-up.  They sound to be fair for the money, and my car like your isn't (yet!) a polisher's car. That said, in a couple of months time I won't remember the extra 80 quid for the UC ones so will maybe go with them.

    Thanks again, James

  2. I've found a few people talking about the rear wings they do but they look to be a slightly different construction, edged with gel coated fibreglass.. can't find anything on the fronts though.

Mankee - I'd like to claim this is for unsprung weight but it's purely cosmetic.  My car has a few 'battle scars' but over the next year I plan on smartening it up a bit.  I'll drop Neil a line, thanks for the tip..

  3. I'm in the happy postion of keeping a rock-solid low 80's although I'm not quite sure why.

I have an 82C stat with a single 2mm hole, together with the race fan switch (73469).  According to the archives that will make the fan kick in at 86C and stay on until the rad cools to 76C.  In practise once the fan kicks in stays on pretty much on all the time.

With the fan cutting in so early I'd expect water hitting the thermostat to be cold enough to close it but according to the temp gauge sensor in the water rail it's just about spot on.

(for your survey purposes - 2007 EU3, supersport cams, standard 4:1 and inlet manifold, silicone hoses).

  4. So 'Race' then, not 13/14s.. caterhamparts lists both 76101/76102 and 76101R/76102R as race stays - no clues as to what, if any, difference there is though.

I have to say the idea of just shortening them is getting more appealing given I know a couple of vaguely competent welders.

  5. Hi mate,

It would be much simpler if CC said what the difference between the different stays was.. I've just been googling but haven't found much.  Safest I guess is the standard 13/14s unless I can find the spec for either of the race ones listed anywhere.  As far as I know my car has only ever had the original academy 13" 70 profile tyres and now the 55 profile ones so not sure why it would the wingstays would be so far out.

  6. Thanks smiffy. I've just measured the horizontal radius and get around 12" so guess mine are also for 15" wheels.

The caterhamparts site lists four different wing stays : 'Race', 'Race Type', 13/14 and 15/16.  No idea how the race ones differ but guess I need the 13/14s.  At 60 quid a corner I'll keep my eye on the for sale section...

  7. Hi, can anyone tell me exactly what I need to buy or do to lower the front mudguard height on my ex-academy car? I'm guessing the academy tyres are much higher profile than the 13" cr500's so I have quite a gap now:

  8. Thats great, thanks Mankee..  No groove so they're not 1144s.  I reckon I'll get myself some new pads (for the sake of it) and if the squealing is reduced that'll be a bonus....

Next TD will be late August now so plenty of time to sort them.

  9. Interesting - I wasn't sure whether the Spitfire Mintex pads had a groove or not and I can't find a photo of the fronts or backs of them to compare.  The squealing when cold makes me thing they're probably a race pad plus they stop very well.  It'd still be nice to know exactly what they are though!

Mankee - thanks for the offer of the shims, I can pick some up round here to save you a trip to the post office though.  I'll try cleaning up the pad face too.

  10. Thanks SM25... I was thinking about changing to 1144's for the sake of it so it'll save me a few quid if that's what they are.  The cold squeal is annoying though.

The disks were new quite recently.  Coppaslip has never really worked for me but I'll see if chamferring makes a difference.  I've seen some 3M anti-squeal backing pads which I might try too.

  11. Hi Christian, let me know what you want for it and your paypal/bacs details if you do have one..

Commiserations on the sale by the way...  *****edit.. Commiserations were because I thought it was gone but just seen your post today.  I guess that makes it congratulations that you still have it..I'm sure someone else will be along to snap it up shortly though.

  12. Hi Nick,

I bought an Academy/Roadsport last year and upgraded to supersport spec a couple of months ago.  Having done a trackday before and after the upgrade I can say that its a worthwhile upgrade.  Main difference is that it doesn't run out of puff at 6k but carries on pulling past 7k.  It also has a lovely howl from 4k and some nice pops on the overrun.

I picked up some good used CC (Piper) Supersport cams from a CDX special edition, Piper verniers and a CC supersport ECU that I had matched to my 5AS.  Including sundries everything came to just shy of a bargain £300 and took about 3 hours to fit.  (Quick caveat: second hand cams need careful installation so if in doubt the safest option is new.)

DVA has some really good info on his site so spend a while reading everything on there.  I ended up backing the inlet timing off a bit from recommended settings to improve the idle but might revisit it sometime.

If you think this might be the first of a number of upgrades then I'd definatley talk to Oily about an Emerald.

  13. No idea but I'll check next time I'm under the car.. it says 'used 2000 onwards' which would imply I probably do.

Presumably the much vaunted calibration table only applies to earlier cars which take the speed from the driveshaft sensor so I'll just get on and calibrate off my old tom tom.
