Peter T
I have accidently bent my Gib strip from my saddle of my Myford lathe, and need to bend it true again. I can't afford to simply hit it witha hammer as i might do more damage than good. It is 30mm by 8mm thick and 9" long. I think it is spring steel. Any suggestions please as i need to machine some parts up tonight. Carbon Components from K9 Composites
wag
You could straighten it a bit in a vice, but it will spring back a bit. You could fiddle with some spacers to push it a bit further than straight. If its a precision part, I guess you have a problem.
Peter T
Not really the kind of item you should put in a vice, it has to be smooth both sides, it allows a small amount of movement along a machined surface, and should not bind. Don Cook
I’m afraid it’ll probably have had it, A new one won’t be the end of the world though. What happened ? adjusting the top slide then it wasn’t fully home ?
John Howe
Try the local blacksmith... if you have country style one in your location he will doubtless do it whilst you wait. Peter T
Don, i droped the slide and it kinked it. Ordering new parts from Myford is worse than Quaife, they still take flipping ages, i have had a set of headstock bearings on order now for 6 weeks, they claim backlog due to their summer holidays !!! Foxy Smith
What I think I would do as a temporary measure till you get the proper part is get a piece of ground silver steel of the appropriate dims from an engineers supplier (J+L or Cromwell's whatever) Don't try to harden it, use it in the annealed state it come in, won't last forever but long enough till the proper part comes. As Don says think the original part is u/s.
