marshy
Oh bother! Just got one in the middle of the screen about 1cm, and I have a feeling this is a possible MOT failure point??? Has anyone out there ever used any windscreen repair people who mend the chips rather than getting the whole screen replaced? Would appreciate any comments... Area Representative Nick Chan Posted September 14, 2005 Area Representative Share Posted September 14, 2005 I had large one repaired on my MPV that was right in the line of sight. It only took 15 mins whilst I visited Homebase and is nearly invisible. Apparently if I had taken it in straight away instead of waiting 3 months (!!) it would have been a perfect job.... If you have windscreen insurance then the £25 charge is usually claimed direct from them on your behalf. Unfortunately Direct Line don't have this cover ☹️ so I stumped up the cash anyway. IMO well worth it HTH Nick Now the Orange HPC - A 2.0 VX - 😬

Roger Ford
If it's just a chip it's repairable if it's "less than the size of a pound coin". If it's got any cracks coming out from it, they probably won't do it, as the cracks will spread under the clamping pressure of the device they use. Most comprehensive insurance will cover you for a free repair, or a complete replacement with an excess of typically £50-£60, without affecting your no claims or premium. Given that heated Caterham screens are over £250, this is a pretty good deal.
marshy
Thanks for the info Roger...yes there are a couple of cracks radiating from it but I reckon it's worth trying a repair before suffering the cost of a new windscreen. Guess I need to check out my insurance details
strongy
Even if you do have to get a new screen the excess will only be about £50. I had to get one replaced last year, my insurance used RAC windscreens. It was a farce from start to finish, they had never hear of Caterham, didn't have an account set up with them, eventually ordered the wrong screen, I contected CC and got the correct part number, passed it on to RAC. This all took 3 weeks and the car was waiting for an MOT re-test. When it came the fitter took one look at the car and said the job was too specialist for him. I said just leave the screen and I'll fit it myself- which I did. *mad* Best of luck with the repair. Myles
If you source the screen and do it yourself, MSM (at the very least) are usually able to get the excess waived... strongy
Heated screen cost £200ish 🤔 🤔 I paid £50 excess and fitted it myself Strongy, pratting about on Blatchat when I should either be working or getting ready to go home
marshy
Eeek! Myles/Strongy...was it a relatively easy job???
strongy
Very easy, the hardest part was getting to the stanchion fittings on the inside of the car, once some of the trim was removed this was easy though 20 min job Strongy, pratting about on Blatchat when I should either be working or getting ready to go home

flaps7
Broke my screen after 'chip' went to crack. RAC Windscreens were a farce , bought screen myself from Caterham, fitted it myself. Claimed for screen, carriage AND my fitting cost at £17. Insurance paid for it all less excess. Complained to RAC as I had waited days for them to get it sorted. Nothing. Found email address of RAC MD and sent him a brief email. Got immediate response from MD of their winscreen division or customer service, I'm not sure which, who I must say was very good. Admitted that they had performed below par. Told me RAC were going to place funds with Caterham so that they could obtain quick despatch without sending cheque (this was the cause of the delay - cheque not sent by RAC). I wouldn't trust them to replace my screen and it is quite easy to do. Believe you me, if I can do it anyone can. Flaps
marshy
Well, found out my insurance covers it except for £60 excess...but feeling brave, and although I have all the finesse of an East German shot-putter, I might just have a go myself 😬...provided of course they can't repair the original. Will avoid the RAC though!!!!
