_Tim_
What kind of socket is the correct fitment for big end bolts (on a K)? You can just see from this pic here that they're not the usual square bolt head style. Getting them off was no problem with a regular 10mm socket as they're being discarded anyway, but I want to make sure I have the correct socket for when I put new ones in. - Tim Caterham 7 - BMW E30 M3 - Nissan Navara Follow my engine rebuild project here
CageyH
Looks like a torx type socket to me. How many points do they have?
_Tim_
I don't think it's torx, as I have some of those and they were a worse fit than a regular socket. 12 points, slightly dished betwen them. - Tim Caterham 7 - BMW E30 M3 - Nissan Navara Follow my engine rebuild project here
CageyH
I think Halfords do a range of sockets that will fit. Called Star sockets or something. Take a bolt down to any reputable tool shop, and they should be able to sort you out.
Foxy Smith
Snap-On refer to them as 12-point torx and def have suitable sockets, pricey tho'
Myles
Erm, it is Torx - we did PSC's engine with Halfrauds-Pro kit - if it doesn't fit properly, you must just have the wrong size... Allen Payne
A normal 12 (or is it 16?) point socket works fine.
Dave McCulloch
From memory it's an E12 socket - Halfrauds sell them. Dave
Sheds Moderator
I can't see the pic bt if it's the same as the stretch bolts holding on the head then it's an E12, sold in Halfords, as posted above. You may get away with a 10mm or 3/8 on the BEs but DO NOT try this on the head bolts as they are very tight and you will burger them.
oilyhands
It is NOT a torx, it is a regular 10m (M6 size) bolt head but with a bihex patter, just buy a 10mm bihex patter socket. Dave
_Tim_
Deffo not an E12. I have an E12 socket in my halfords pro set and it's not even close in shape. I think I will do a tour of likely establishments armed with a bolt. - Tim Caterham 7 - BMW E30 M3 - Nissan Navara Follow my engine rebuild project here
Myles
OK -if Oily says it's not Torx, then it's not torx - but the Halfrauds Pro 150-piece set definitely has an appropriate socket...
