4 - 5 Speed Gearbox Conversion

Recommended Posts

Starting to gather all the parts required to attempt the 4 to 5 speed gearbox conversion on a 1991 live axle chassis. But need to make up a new gearbox mounting bracket, is Brent Chiswick still making the conversion brackets. I have tried without success to contact him using the contact details from Low Flying.

I really like the position of the 4 speed gear lever but have noticed the 5 speed lever is almost under the dashboard, is it possible to remote off the 5 speed and keep the gear lever in the same position.

Brent was away on holiday recently but is back now.

As far as I know, he is still doing the brackets.

I'm planning on seeing him tomorrow so if he hasn't spotted this post I will let him know.

As for the conversion- its well worth the effort!

There is a section in Se7en-up that shows most of the work that needs doing.

The cutting up the chassis is the worst part *wink*

Hi, I'm here and still doing the conversion kits. If you mailed my office address while I was away, I may well have accidentally deleted it along with the 200 or so mailings I had inviting me to buy Viagra or bulk buy cigarettes or some luxury condoms to 'Please my girl' *mad* I don't, obviously, use any of these products but may well have mistaken your mail for one of them so sorry about that.

Mail me again with your address details and I will sort out a kit for you. *thumbup*

Q187RFB, I changed to a 5 speed box and retained the original 4 speed gearstick position.

It's a tight fit, only about 6mm clearance at the end of the tail housing to the bridge which mounts the gearlever.

Cut about 0.5" off the lower gearbox mounting, otherwise the rear of the gearbox sits to high, you may have to do some surgery on the rubber mounting block also, as the lower position will make the mounting wider.

Shorten the remote linkage to suit, I made a much sturdier affair and improved the change action a lot, (got a picture here if your interested, mail me direct and I'll send it across).

Also don't forget to remove the reverse gear lock out block directly below the end of the gearstick, otherwise you'll not get reverse gear.

If you need any more info get in touch, I much prefer the 4 speed position to the banging your knuckles under the dash 5 speed position, all in all a worthwhile modification. regards Nigel.
