Edelston
When first started from cold my Superlight is hunting between 500 - 2000 rpm and occasionaly stalls. Once up to normal temp she run fine with a stable idle speed. Any ideas? Mick
Mr Locust
Don't drive it 'til it's warmed up? Sorry, couldn't resist. Sounds like Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) problems. Do a search in tech talk. Ian Green and Silver Roadsport 😬
caterhamnut
Yep - check the IAVC - might need a clean - some info about it here halfway down. I don't think this is a vital component - we ran for a while with ours un-plugged (in order to see if symptoms continued for something else) - apart from the cold starting issues you mentioned, no change. It is a bit like trying to start without any choke in an older car I guess. Big update! here 77,777miles in 3 years
Adam
A less likely cause is the coolent temp sensor (the one used by the ecu rather than dash gauge). If you have access to a ohmmeter (DVM), then you can check that the resistance gets lower as the coolent temp goes up. I think typically values are in the range 2000-3000ohms (cold) down to 100-300ohms (hot).
Ernie Panks
I unplugged my 1600 Superlight's IACV when I started to have a cold start problem and found that it started OK, but hunted exactly as you say, I would guess that the IACV is stuck in the closed position. Apparently the EU2 IACV is less powerful than the later EU3 one. Hope this helps, Ernie visit Carrotland.co.uk
Tom White
As posted above it is probably the IACV or the Coolant Temp. Sensor. The ECU will give extra fuelling when the engine is cold hence the hunting. If you do decide to clean the IACV beware of testing it dismounted as it has been known to disassemble itself all over your garage. I have written a bit on this here Good luck Tom
Edelston
Thanks all, Excellent feedback and advice. I now know what an IACV is/does, I'll check it out this weekend. Mick
Myles
Apparently the EU2 IACV is less powerful than the later EU3 one and they are totally incompatible - plug and driver-wise... ...and while we're on the subject, the Emerald can only drive an EU2 version directly...
