wild bill
Dearest Blatters recently serviced car (1800 Supersport) timing belts et al and replaced with the reccommended oil. 4.5 litres Horrible tappet noise ☹️ upon start up so ring caterham who say go to 10w 50 part synth oil. This makes the noise go away Now 3 weeks later noise is back but only when car has been driven with a bit of gusto (nothing too strenuous and not over 6500 revs) and the oil presumably has thinned a bit. Any advice guys. I have checked the oil level and this is OK and when car has been driven gently for a bit tappet noise seems to go away I am bloody confused (about most things)
dogvet
Is the car on hydraulic tappets? if so then it is the oil pressure within the tappet failing to "extend" the tappet fully. Not usually life threatening. Edited by - dogvet on 17 Nov 2004 13:54:
oilyhands
Sounds like oil aeration to me, does the car have an Apollo tank or dry sump? if not then I would suspect that it is suffering with oil aeration, if it is bad enough to cause tappet collapse, think what aerated oil could be doing to your bearings. Oily
