It probably depends on how it's knackered and how knackered it is. I would guess that if it's sufficiently knackered the ECU will spot it and ignore it's input (same effect as disconnecting it). If it's not spotted then it will fool the ECU into running the engine too rich or too lean in steady-state conditions, but whether it can go far enough out of scope to be noticeable without the ECU deciding to ignore it I don't know. Tim Seipel will know, perhaps he'll be along soon.
