Badger Bill
I know that it has been done to death already, but I have to make a rapid decision and I need top advice from the likes of Hoopy and Angus&Tessa. What are the tyres for everyday grippy driving during the wet English winter? I cannot find A021r's so it would seem from previous postings that either Yoko A539's are a possibility or CR500's. The main difference between the two is that a set of four CR500's cost over 200gbp more than the Yokos... And I can only get CR's in 55 profile loosing me precious centimeters of clearance. Current car/tyre spec is Blade engined, 450kg(ish), 175 x 70 x 13's & Mag Alloys (ford escort pattern) Thanks BB
Graham Sewell
Stating the obvious, have you tried George Polley? He brings in thousands of A021R's in that size for a race series and normally does them very cheap. Low tech luddite - xflow and proud!
Badger Bill
Yup, tried him first after reading the archives since they have been made available again. Crackin' fella, but reckoned that there will not be any available for six weeks... If I have another week like last I won't be here by then... ☹️ Then tried Bookatrack's tyre arm, again plenty of advice and gave me loads of time on the phone, but ultimately I'm left with the same questions... 🙆🏻 This is my only driver so needs to be well planted and I am willing to spend, but not if it is unnecessary. Thanks for the quick reply 😬 BB
scooby dooby doo
CR500s. I know they say they are 175/55R13 size but the width is almost exactly the same as a 185/60R13 Yoko and the diameter is only 1cm less - ie you lose 5mm of clearance. We performance is magical - unbelievable. They are also good in the dry - similar to a 21 I guess. Cost shouldn't be more that 75 quid a tyre compared to 50 a tyre for 21R. Badger Bill
Hoopy, Do you have a number where I can get CR500's for 75quid. Both Bookatrack and George Polley quoted over 90quid... (175 x 55 x 13) The A021's were quoted at 60quid undelivered or fitted... (185 x 60 x 13) Do you lot know something that I don't on this tyre aquisition business? Cheers for the advice, very much appreciated. BB
happylarry
I get my 021s from Adams and Page on the Cressex Estate, High Wycombe. They can normally get them in from Yoko overnight. Good price and they're excellent fitters. Not sure whether they're convenient to you. If so, call and speak to Stuart on 01494 525971. I run Yoko 021R 185x70.13 as they're cheap and great for both road and track. The extra few mms of clearance isn't really compromised on track - so, recommended Zetec: Proud and Raw-T !! scooby dooby doo
you ring somebody at Avon who's number I've forgotten.... ☹️ Rob Grigsby will know it though.... aha ❗ found the details: Brian Davis at Avon (01225 357694) 175/55/R13 76.50 205/55/R13 86.50 overnight shipping 12 all plus VAT Total 397.15 the 175s are fine on 6" rims, the 205s on 7" rims but bigger is better up to an 8.5" rim. compared to the equivalent yoko tyres you lose 5mm of ground clearance with the 175s (vs 185s, width is the same) and just over a cm with the 205s. wear is better than a yoko21, dry grip is probably similar if not a bit better. wet grip is astounding. the current compound also survives dry track days happily (its the control tyre for one series i think) HOOPY R706KGU Hoopylight R
Graham Sewell
BB: When you were speaking to George, you did ask for the 70 profile tyres? As you seem to be quoting for the 60's. There is a big difference in cost with the 70's being significantly less expensive. Also, do you need a full set of 4 tyres or have you just worn out your rears? If the latter, then I have a spare pair of new 21s in 175/70R13 in my loft that I might sell on at a price that I can replace them when George gets some in. Badger Bill
Graham, Yes, the quote is for 60's. The diff has just been changed so that I could get 10mph per 1000rpm in top with 185 x 60 x 13's. The old ones are 175 x 70's but all tyres are from the ark and have all the grip of bambi on ice 😳 Unfortunatley I need all four changed and certainly within 6weeks... ☹️ Thanks for the offer of the 'Loft two' but at the moment I think that I will be trying either the yoko 539's or the AvonCR500's. Shame that there are not any 60profile 21's available. Just got to check the ol' resources and clear it with the manager ☹️ Cheers for your offer, agian, though. Most kind. jwyatt
CR500's. They are the control tyre for the Roadsports B and Supergrads championships (I run in the former). Wet and dry performance is excellent, in terms of feel and driveability they are the best tyre I have ever used. Dry wear rates can be a little high, but not outrageous compared to equally sticky rubber. Yoko 539's are NOT high-performance tyres, they are very hard and are great for long-life but bear no comparison with 21's or CR500's - escpecially for wet weather use! Graham Sewell
For 60 profile, have you tried Caterham Cars? Choose online Parts/wheels and tyres. A little expensive at £70.44 each plus VAT and P&P. Low tech luddite - xflow and proud! Edited by - Graham Sewell on 13 Aug 2003 12:54:
Badger Bill
Graham, jwyatt, Thanks for both the lead and the advice. I've phoned Caterham, they've got 3 A021's and are checking on a delevery for tomorrow... Fingers crossed. Thanks for the warning of the 539's, close thing, I'd nearly placed the order! If they are unsucessful on the delevery front I might be in need of the 'loft two' yet! Thanks again BB
scooby dooby doo
The CR500 does lose out quite a bit to the yoko32 in the dry (took me a few hundred blatting miles to get used to the understeer after turning in) and will lose more to an ACB10. However, the wear rates is MUCH better than both - I used less than half the tread playing in the alps - last time I went I took brand new 32Rs to deeply illegal with less miles. The 539 is not a bad tyre by any means - its just not as good as a 21R, 32R, CR500 or ACB10. HOOPY R706KGU Hoopylight R
