anthonym
I think mine is not leaking. But I don't know what one looks like when it is. Pretty sure the small amount fo oil on mine is wind blown from the engine after 600 motorway miles. Here's what I saw: So I am feeling my lack of experience of what a leaky diff looks like in the garage. No drips on the floor. Context: the car is banned from road use pending various fixes including oil leaks one of which is allegedly the diff.Anthony
BenF
Hi Anthony,When my R300K had a leaky diff, there was no such evidence on the chassis, I only saw this from drops on the garage floor.Ben
anthonym
Hi Ben,Good, that's plus one for no drip means no leaky. edit and come to think of it, oil on the diff wasn't caused by it leaking..Anthony
BenF
Also if I remember correctly, the diff oil (like gearbox oil) has a very specific smell and it is nothing like engine oil
aerobod - near CYYC
Hi Anthony, with the slightest leak you don't necessarily get drips on the floor, but the diff housing below the shaft seals can get a bit of surface oil on it, should be able to wipe with a finger in that case and smell the pungent diff oil smell. SM25T
If it is going to leak, it will be from drive shaft outlets, inlet at the propshaft, or from the breather tube on top.
anthonym
aha, so not from the join right at the lowest part. The bits you (both) mention are real shiny clean, not a hint of oil. Not the tiniest vestige.I have had my highly sensitive smells monitor (wifey) take a whiff and she just says it's all horrible. Granted this was engine versus gearbox. I am pretty sure if the horrible smell was different she would have noticed a different horrible. She just said it was all the same. All these descriptions are helpful and reassuring me. Thanks.Anthony
Tom_Arundel
They are not leaks, they are part of the rear basket frame corrosion protection system (RBFCPS for short) as designed by Lotus (Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious)
