Knee trim - what is it for?

I have just drilled out the knee trim rivets on my new car to install the captive nut thing for the aero screen. (Most Sevens have self taping screws, but mine does not for some reason)

Other than looking tidy, what other function does the knee trim have? Once riveted back access is restricted. I’m tempted to add lightness...

Give somewhere to mount a switch and an LED lamp for foot well illumination on both sides - useful for when you drop the torch in a pitch black footwell, with the roof on, in a torrential rain storm, at night, in a deep, dark wood . . sorry, forest, somewhere up a mounting in Austria . . . and you need the torch to read directions to the hotel you are trying to fin d in the middle of un-lit nowhere . . .

Or rather, it is now, after that paritcular episode highlighted the problem ;-)
