A friends stack dash doesn't seem to be working correctly. The rev counter is very slow to respond and doesn't follow the actual revs (I would guess about half when compared to the sound and the ACE shift lights). It shows 2000 when I would say its at 4000. Also oil pressure isn't shown.

 

here are some pictures of the settings, any help would be appreciated, I don't have a stack dash so its all new to me.

Have you got the Caterham wiring diagram for the Stack dash and the Stack instructions?

Did it ever work properly and now it doesn't? Any recent work?

I'd start with the instrument earth.

Almost certainly related to the 'count' of engine speed.  Your friend should be able to access the Stack set-up menu system and he'll find something along the lines of 2 cylinders or 4 cylinders buried in there; just select the alternative to the one that is currently being used!

I do have some more specific notes on this somewhere but a bit of fiddling in the menu system should unearth the correct parameter setting (and allow an alternative setting to be selected).

Engine speed cylinders James? 

I seem to recall on my car it had to be set to what seems to be an odd number? But can't recall what that was?

That's it - the E.S. Cylinders setting.  I have a feeling that the choice is 4 or 2 (for wasted spark arrangements??) but, whatever, just toggle that setting to the 'other' option and Bob should be your Uncle.  You can do this with the engine running so can play and toggle back and forth until it comes good.

Hi chaps, thanks for the info and guide (he didn't have a copy, so much appreciated).

 

Photos now sorted, my mistake.

 

It was set to E.S.Cylinders 1, and was operating strangely (revs), so i changed it to 4 (thinking 4 cylinders) and then it didn't work at all. Ill try 2 :o)

Seems to work best on e.s cylinder 1, still slow to respond and about half the revs I would expect (based on sound and shift light). I’ve uploaded a video to the Dropbox link above.

Have you changed anything in the run-up to this problem appearing? 

The only other thought I have is to change the pin-out from the ECU that feeds the Stack revcounter to another of the engine-speed outputs.  I presume you're running an MBE ECU?  From memory, the ECU has a couple of different engine speed outputs (which count every fire pulse - so twice per revolution of the engine; or one pulse per engine revolution), so there might be a solution there.

But if the revcounter used to work and doesn't now, the key question has to be "what's changed?".

Friend has only had the car a few weeks, when he got it I didn’t think the rev counter was working correctly but didn’t pay too much attention, looked at it yesterday and that’s when I started to look at the settings. It was originally set at e.s cylinder 1 and that’s what I’ve returned it to. 

 

Its an original R400D so assume it’s MBE, I’ll look tomorrow, thanks

Pictures in #1 now work.

Also the oil temp doesn’t work, can’t see any settings for it so assume it’s a sensor

You can measure the resistance directly across the sensor with everything disconnected and the engine both hot and cold.

I'd also check the connection(s) at the sensor.

But this still leaves the sluggish response of the display of engine speed...

Stack have replied and said it should be set to 2 (E.S cylinders) but at 2 the revs are incorrect. Think it might have to go back to caterham as he only bought it a month ish ago

I imagine he has been in communication with the factory in the USA because neither myself or Peter have spoken with him about the issue.

I wonder if you might be able to message him and ask him to give me a call? I think I may be able to help him out. I can make some suggestions on what to do that should get him up and running without needing to take the dash out of the car. As a non member, I can’t post to the thread.

I was going to say ask Stack; refurbed my 17 year old Stack dadh last year and slesys helpful. Aldo if mrmory served thr manualz arr svsiksble from thrir site.

Thanks Steve, Andrew was great, super knowledgeable! Top bloke.

 

As the Duratec has a coil per cylinder the E.S.Cylinders should be 1, which makes the revs match the ACE shifts light but not a very linear flow of the dial, Andrew said the fix is either a MBE update or take the stack taco feed from one of the trigger wires off one of the coils (as the MBE taco feed isn't updates regular enough for a smooth dial flow. Problem is the ideal will read 1/4 of actual (as only one coil feed), but that would be worth if for a better dial flow.

 

As the car is a recent purchase ive told my mate to talk to caterham to sort it.
