You've probably tried all of these already but:

  • Clean both threads and inspect what you can
  • Lubricate
  • Start counterclockwise before tightening ± trying to feel for the start of the thread
  • Start at different positions systematically
  • DECIDE IT'S GOING TO GO THIS TIME!

Sorry but in my frustration I have not explained this very well, I cannot get the plug into the hole either trying from the top or from under the car. The rear tube is in the way, so I am trying just with my fingertips as that is all I can get in there.

Sorry yes I just looked at Jonathan's link and it does describe it the other way round from the way I said, i.e. jacking from the chassis rails being better than from the de Dion tube. I may well have remembered it the wrong way around, however the point is still that the de Dion tube will move vertically by quite a bit between the two jacking methods and one or the other will provide better access. If the tube is in the way when supporting the tube, do try supporting the chassis and letting the tube droop as you say.
