Gearbox or diff whine?

OK, so my 7 has developed a distinct whine somewhere from the rear - it only occurs once the car is warmed up and when I partially or fully lift off the throttle. Seems to be in 3rd, 4th & 5th only but very difficult to hear anything in lower gears due to exhaust noise etc. Having a passenger doesn't affect it.

Anyone come across this? My thoughts were either some gearbox or diff bearing issue?? Specifically, there is an (old) oily look to the gearbox casing but the bellhousing is clean - can't currently check the diff due to a short term mobility problem. Car just had a new comp clutch fitted by CC and the whine has occurred since then.

Could it just be the gearbox/diff needs oil?

Facts: 2001, 1.8L, 120bhp Roadsport with 5 speed box and standard diff. and suspension.
