Radiator leak

Recommended Posts

I noticed there is a small leak in my radiator (K-series 2003, SV) http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7323/9093186437_c6381cc919_c.jpg

My radiator is 17"X10.5" (excluding top and bottom cap) http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3784/9093160981_b657749ac8_c.jpg and

Had a look at CC website, can only find this. It is out of stock and has got different caps (top cap has an extra small tube that mine doesn't have between the thermo switch and the hose. Also not sure if the bottom drain valve is the same...)

I prefer a like-for-like replacement as i am not keen for any modification as time is tight for me now. Any one please knows the part number for my radiator and any suggestion of a supplier please?

Thank you in anticipation

Ahmed

Plenty of people have had problems with a Radtec and suggest you do a search before deciding what radiator to fit

had a quick look at the archive, can't find a post about problems with radtec... Any link please?

Thanks

Like anything I guess, some have problems, some don't.

Built mine in 2001 and thrashed it ever since - rad (same as the Caterham Ford one), rad switch, expansion tank cap all original and working fine. Another commuting weke over - sun and rain.

Heater valve, heater hoses, rack gaitors, and head gasket aren't. Modified cooling system to PRRT/PRT as per Freelander some years ago and it sits on an indicated 82 degrees.

Mind you, it sat on an indicated 82 on Dave's rolling road when the ECU reckoned it was a lot hotter - stat and sender had failed!

I would recommend Radtec, and I did have a slight weep from mine.

It was just out of warranty, I phoned up and they said they'd send me a new one!

I was going awayin 2 weeks, and the brand new radiator arrived in about 5 days and they didn't even ask me to return the original.

Excellent customer service *smile*

Intrigued by the statements I did a quick check in the archives and found this old thread

Quoting Shaun E:
Most of the class 5 sprinters (200bhp+ engines) use the standard Caterham radator. Get the Ford one with ali tanks rather than plastic. You might need a blanking plug as it has an extra connection on it.

I swapped to that when my Radtec started leaking and it works fine even after 3 back to back sessions at Castle Combe on a hot day!

I have the same radiator as your failed item Ahmed, mine is currently ok (touching lots of wood etc!)

All the best

Richard

My rad has the plastic tanks. Generally it leaks around the crimp, nipping these up with some pliers seems to do the trick. If you've holed the core, threats a little trickier. It's not clear from the pics, but it doesn't seem the leak is the same leak that many of us have experienced. Have you tried the radiator sealant gunk you whack in the coolant? Looks small enough that it might just work...

took the car today to a radiator specialist, he said it is not the usual stone chip that is easily repairable. He suggested it may be a leak at the junction of one of the vertical tubes to the transverse plate. He said aluminium repair is "specialist" not as easy as copper. He seems more expert in copper radiators. I am not sure if it is a good idea to let him try to repair it.....

Give the gunk a go. It might work *wink* Then find an aluminium rad repairer if they can do it easily (and for less than £200 - I would hope they can!). Perhaps they can do a bit of cheeky welding down there. You may have to take it off though, could be a little awkward to get welding kit in there.
