Duffy
I now need steel baulk rings in my Pro Quaife type 9. where down south(with in hour from Gatwick) could I buy and have them fitted.... D Duffield
EFA
Unless you plan on bedding these rings in every 300 or so miles, stick with std rings or buy a Caterham 6 speed. Quaife and RRT both sell these - both are in or near Otford (7Oaks) Kent. scooby dooby doo
can you explain what bedding in is in this context? And what's a baulk ring? I though the dogs either engaged directly (dog box) or you had syncros in the way for a synchrmesh box.... *confused* On the lookout for more knowledge... Fast Westie
Baulk ring = synchro Steel ones are stronger and less likely to shatter when treated hard (ie race conditions), but as Arnie rightly says, they need a lot of bedding in. ECR
The steel synchro rings need hand lapping to mate with the synchro cones (same process as lapping a valve in). Apparently if this is not done they are prone to friction weld themselves to the cones (because if they don't have 100% contact they will slip too much ?). I have never really understood why once a ring is lapped to a cone it should need relapping so soon. Presumably because they are so flimsy the work involved in gear changing distorts them. Re lapping was not neccesary however with the Moly coated steel rings available from SPC (no longer made).I suppose that this was because the moly coating allowed some slippage without friction welding occuring. There are even shortages now of Ford OE bronze rings (Paul Davis experienced this very recently). Dont forget, the type 9 box has been out of production for a long time. V7 SLR
Are the Caterham 6-speed rings manufactured especially for that box, or are they from Ford? ECR
I know nothing about the 6 speed box other than the gearing originated from Land Rover (apparently !) so perhaps the syncros are sourced there also ?
