Gavinsmithartist
Hi, can anyone advise on fuel addatives for winter storage. My bikers mates add a fuel sabiliser to prevent oxidisation of the fuel which can cause gums to clog the injectors and lines. On older cars and bikes it also helps to presrve the tanks and liners. My mate ended up stripping his Bonnie to cure the problem when left last year whilst in Aussie.
CageyH
Seems a sensible idea to me, just remember to run the engine for a few minutes to get the treated fuel into the places it needs to be. STP, Wynn's, Carplan, POR15 and Frost all do one, as do Briggs and stratton.
Exmog
Why not start the car once a month?? Keeps everytning from seizing up nicely.
CageyH
But does not stop the unleaded going "off"
Gavinsmithartist
Exmog, I do run the car and will give it a drag up and down our road. They never grit and salt. It's more about preserving the fuel and preventing emulsion and gum.
Myles
Why not start the car once a month?? Keeps everytning from seizing up nicely. Mmm. Some say that this will just increase the moisture and combustion by-products in the oil as you'll never get the engine hot enough to burn/evaporate these off - so you could be left with a different kind of problem... Sheds Moderator
The thing is with all these additives you never carry out a control experiment under your actual conditions. If someone came along and said (eg) "we took 2 cars (or bikes), parked them side by side in a normal garage, no special treatment, after 3 months the one with the treatment started first go, the other one didn't" they'd have a point. Instead it's like oil additives that "reduce engine wear" or fancy ignition leads that start at -20°C. Nobody stops to think that actually nodern oils already reduce wear and your original leads will make an engine start at -
Phil B
Why are you storing the car in winter? Drive it all year round. Phil
