rj
I know the box does not like +8.6k RPM - but what is it exactly that goes wrong? /r Edited for spelling Edited by - rj on 19 Oct 2008 12:13:
Peter T
Centrifugal forces. Oil gets thrown from the bearings and gears, which causes wear and premature failure.
rj
Peter ISTR something about parts seizing up - just don't know how or what. Bearings and gears could be coped with.

Peter T
Heat is an issue too, from what i recall the bearings are rather small and have difficaulty transmitting their heat to the oil through lack off. 5th gear also wears out. Phil at road and race perhaps knows more about these boxes than anyone and would be the mentor to speak to. He may also have a box that is beyound repair for you to examine. *thumbup*

nigelpugh
Hi RJ, If you want to know what fails on the Caterham Six Speed, then I have detailed files on it!!! But it was Phil at R&R who fixed mine, but it did cost me over £1100 to boot too!! Nige. Nigel R500 CP - New 2008 Duratec R500
rj
Hi Nigel, I'd love to! Is it something you can email? I have had Phil to fix mine too, but in a not too far future I hope to be able to rev my engine to 9.5k - hence my concern. /regin

Jason Plato
I understand that the root cause is that the box is splash lubrication and hence high revs = lack of lube. I've had mainshafts wear as well as the usual syncros and selectors. Wear is greatly accelerated when using the box hard from stone cold at sprints and hillclimbs.
