Serious question on K-series cars

Recommended Posts

By back ground is very much x-flow and vauxhaul so please forgive the request and I have no wish to offend anyone, but I have a friend who has just stuffed his 993 RS and decided that tracking a car thats going up in value is just getting silly.

Anyway, he is looking at k-series cars around 12-13k mark.

Other than ;-

head-gaskets

Oil sender units

CRB's

mid 90's powdercoating

Are there any other generic issues ?

Items 2/3/4 are Caterham issues applicable to all engine variants.

The only big issue with the K-Series that is solely related to the engine is the HG problem, and then some engines are fine, others are not. This can easily be solved by a good engine builder such as DVA, either waiting until it's happened or before if there's any other engine work to be done. IMHO it's wise to have it checked in advance though to prevent bearing damage etc.

Apart from HGF, for track use K-Series Caterhams benefit from being dry sumped, or as a minimum an Apollo tank needs to be fitted.

If it's to be a trackday car I would argue he should make sure his prospective purchase has an Apollo air/oil separator at the least and preferably a dry sump. Both are retrofittable, but if the car has been tracked without either, then there may be engine trouble ahead....

Kseries: Add starter click of doom / weeping water rail that can lead to air in system and head gasket failure.

CRB seems much more common on Kseries but that may been volume related.

Don't forget to add lightness :-)
