Upgrade K1.6 SS -> K1.8 SS

Recommended Posts

Hi,

after buying a Rover MGF engine (K1.8) i plan to upgrade my worn out K1.6 SS. The plan is:

- Using the plenum and injectors and fuel pressure regulator from the K1.8

- Using the SS cams and ECU from the 1.6 SS-Kit

- Using 52 mm aluminium thottle body from my K1.6 SS

Some Questions:

1. Do i have to worry about fuel pressure? / Do the 1.8 SS Kit contains a upgraded fuel pressure regulator? Should i use the pressure regulator from the 1.6 SS or from the 1.8 🤔

2. Is a adviceable to buy the lightned flywheel, once the machine is out. Or too rough on 1.8 SS?

3. Any other hints for this upgrade?

Mainly road usage, 4-1 Exaust if this matters.

Thanks

Axel

Alex, I carried out a 1.6 to 1.8 last year.

If your budget allows then go for the lightweight flywheel, it transforms the character of the engine.

You will need to increase the fuel pressure from its current 3bar to 4bar. You can either buy an adjustable fuel pressure regulator or squash your current 1 in the vice. The one that came with the 1.8 will still be 3bar

I did have issues with lean running when I finished even tho my fuel pressure was up at 4bar. I would suggest taking it to a rolling road once you have finished to get the fuel mixture checked. I've now fitted and Emerald ECU. Others have had no issues, do a search in tech talk.

Thanks for the replies.

Ordered lightened flywheel and AP Clutch yesterday.

The "fuel pressure" search gives:

- Use the injectors from the 1.8 (more fuel)

- The injectors of 1.8 and 1.6 are the same (baige)

- Fuel pressure of 3 bar is enough til '190 bhp (with Emerald only?)

- Lean mix may result in overheating

So i plan to compress the existing FPR spring. And i need a fuel pressure gauge to iterate the 4 bar.
