comfy seats in a SV

Caesar

Recommended Posts

Caesar,

Not sure what you have in the car at present, but we have covered huge distances in a day in the leather s types fitted to our SV.

Huge distance = about 700 miles (yes 700) in one day.

USA tour was regularly 250 miles a day.

I really like the SV tillet, but can not justify £600 each!

It was just a thought. I have the CSR and the steering wheel is too close (no more adjustment as it is the type with indicator stalks). What I wanted, ideally, is seats with tilt backs so I can get the better reach and easily change when the co-pilot takes over!

I have jacked up the front of the standard leather SV seats with a couple of spacers and this helps for me but not when the memsahb gets to aim it.

Unclefester, love your abbey road pic, did you know there is a live webcam on site? see here *smile*

Caesar,

Like the webcam, wrong position though!

I was going to ask why not a reverse dished wheel, but I suppose being a CSR with stalk controls does rule it out. At least you should have plenty of seats which will fit, with moveable back, and there's plenty of room for back rake adjustment on a CSR/SV chassis...... *thumbup*

Unclefester (ou est-ce que je devrais dis l'abscès d'oncle)

The Abbey Road webcam is a completely mad thing. You will see loads of Beatle mad japanese, phoning their mates on their mobiles then crossing over, waving madly! I run a rare record shop and we sometimes have it on so people can watch it!

Anyway, the seats; in spite of all the expected flack about me being a lardarse and shopping at sofas-are-us it is a genuine thought.

I intend to tackle the wheel later, I reckon I can devise a cunning plan to shorten the stalks (they currently protrude well past the rim of the wheel) and then I will fit a flat momo: the supplied one is quite dished. This will give me a little more "straight arm" position.

But a seat with a reclining back is a damn good scheme, it means it can be tipped back a little for trackdays giving a better position with a helmet and make itself more comfortable for other drivers. However, I called Demon Tweaks and they said that nothing would fit. I dont believe that they are right, considering the SV has that extra width. It only makes me more determined to get something that does work and stick two fingers up at the critics.

So, no more suggestions that I visit "Leatherland" or a dietician. However, I would consider a couple of paisley cushions just to set things off a little.

Caesar,

I remember you helped when I was looking for "The Snivelling Sh1ts" album!

How tall are you though? My car's an SV and I find it as comfy as anything at LeatherLand.

I suppose the difference is having a flat, removable wheel. I wonder how much further back the face of the wheel is on a CSR though.....it's the first time I've read of this problem on them, but you could have hit on an important difference.

Has yours got the new type dash?

I think you can specify the old type dash, which probably means no stalks, and the plane of the wheel nearer to the dash.

Do you have unusually long arms? *tongue*

If there's really no aftermarket seat with a rakeable back, I'd look at something from a production car like a Lancia Integrale, which has Recaros which do rake. I think you can get them in black leather but if not simply get them re skinned by an upholsterer in whatever you fancy......paisley velveteen would be supercool, to go with the black leather scatter cushions! *thumbup*

I have a guy here who does reupholsery jobs on unusual cars all the time, and there must be specialists in the UK.

The fact that you can't get the wheel far enough away is exactly the reason why I went for a flat dash CSR. I had the same problem in my 21, which had [whisper mode] 'indicator stalks' too. I ended up using a shorter wheel boss and a flatter steering wheel, this got the wheel away just far enough for comfort, without having to alter the stalks, although it was 5 or 6 years ago now, and I may have ended up modifying the stalks too. *wink*

As far as the seats are concerned, an adjustable backrest is an excellent idea, I did it back in the '80's with the first X/F I built, which was a standard bodied car back then of course. The only trouble was, that the cockpit was so tight that i couldn't get my hand down the side to alter the rake very easily.

Have a look in the Kit Car mags. There are always stacks of seats advertised, especially for fairly narrow cars.

I am 5'9" on a warm day, my arms are not especially simian. It is simply the (imho) poor design of the curvy dash in combination with all the clutter behind the boss, that takes the switch mech for the stalks, that brings the wheel too close. That and the fact the wheel has almost 2" of dish. Therefore, I will tackle this on two fronts, one the wheel and two, ther seat back.

I am thinking these might fit, here go to ONLINE CATALOGUE, then SEATS and have a look at the CARRERA RECLINER, only 51cms wide, or the TARGA, same width and great prices! Damn' good company too, most helpful. I will let you know how I get on.

Not easy, they are plastic and quite a complicated construction. In fact, they are not angled that much. I thimk te answer will be to move the whole caboodle down the column a bit. I was going to do that when building but decided to get it finished instead!

War over boys!

Just spoken to COBRA who have decided to re-introduce their very tasty "roadster" seat with a recline and designed to fit in an SV.

It seems they will be taking orders at Stoneleigh.

Good eh!

I made my CSR leather seats a lot more comfortable with more lateral support from the installation of Jill Judds (Soft Bits for Sevens) seat inserts specially made for the SV leather seats. However on long journeys I still find the lack good lumbar support. Wondering if anyone has had their leather seats modified to provide such,

Interesting, the fact that soft-bits makes something, suggests there is a possible "discomfort" issue with the seats. I do not find mine that comfortable mainly due to the reach problem discussed above

The ones Cobra will be offering will be the reclining version (with a narrow adjusting wheel on one side only, to fit in 7) of this here: here

NICE

VERY NICE

(and that means I will have two near-new standard leather jobbies for sale soon)

Caesar.....I do wonder about access to a rotating knob type reclining mechanism....most of the seats you posted links to earlier have the lever type, which is much easier to use if space is limited.

The Cobra you show is 455mm wide, exactly the seat recess size on an SV, where the origianl car has only 400mm, so there isn't much room for your hand.....

When I spoke to Cobra earlier today the said they were designing one specifically for the SV body, I think the seat will be a tad narrower to allow for the mech; anyway, we can see at Stoneleigh, whoever goes can quiz them and report back!
