JP
I'm going to go over the brakes to see what may need replacing during my rebuild and looking at my Owner's Manual there is talk of using a Ford special tool to wind back the calipers.I have a wind back tool somewhere for an old car that I no longer have, but it is not a Ford special tool. Will any tool do? Or does anyone have any recommendations?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted April 21, 2022 Member Share Posted April 21, 2022 There's an excellent guide from Alcester Racing Sevens, but the site seems to be down at the moment. There are several tools offered in the Equipment Register. Where are you? Some people say that they can wind back with long-nosed pliers.Check the advice about winding back and setting the handbrake in the archives.Jonathan
Guy Lowe
A standard right hand wind back tool like THIS will do the job but I found it's easier to get it on the caliper if you grind the small inner lugs off. IYSWIM
DanRo
I used a cheap one from Euro car parts for my standard rear pads. It took quite a bit of heft to turn it but it worked ok. My main worry was to avoid damaging the fixed brake lines whilst applying the force needed.
timb2117
I just carefully used the long nose pliers ends and it worked easily, not really too much torque to apply to achieve the result either.
DanRo
TimAre you using the long nose pliers as a lever, as you might a flat head screw driver, or is there another knack to using them which is specific to pliers?
Guy Lowe
I don't believe some people, you spend a fortune on an expensive toy and then bodge a job rather than spend £14 for the CORRECT TOOL and do it properly.
JP
Cheers Guy. That looks like what I've got. I'll experiment at the weekend...I was just a bit alarmed by the wording in the Owner's Manual that suggested that the tool was hard to find and that I would have to beg a local Ford Dealership to borrow it. Maybe I shouldn't trust a 21 year-old Owner's Manual...
aerobod - near CYYC
For a universal tool that can get the job done on a variety of vehicle disc brake calipers, this tool works with a 3/8" socket extension, but you do need to place pressure against the caliper to keep the dowels engaged will turning:
john milner
I bought a wind back kit from Ebay a couple of years ago for £12.55 which came with several adaptors. The kit I bought is out of stock but visually it is identical to this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252680488760?epid=2103986597&hash=item3ad4ee4738:g:KxcAAOSwJ7RYUBFa
timb2117
I do get you Guy, I really do - I have a garage full of "special tools" for cars and fancy carbon/ titanium bikes -it simply was not readily available and I wanted the work done and it had zero impact on the end result, hence the end tips of the pliers and not leverage
