  1. Hi All,

Having read the final instructions for the L7C track day at Silverstone on the 27th March, I'm a bit concerned about the rules regarding crash helmets.  The orgainsers SLG (Silverstone Circuits Group) are stipulating that all helmets worn on track must be road legal to BS6658A or BS6658AFR or comply with comply with Snell 2005, 2010 and 2015 ratings or as otherwise specified in the MSA blue book.

Does this mean that a lot of bike helmets aren't suitable for this event and have we got to spend in the region of £370.00 for a Bell Sport 5 helmet that is classified as a motorsport approved helmet.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

  2. Hi All,

    Thanks for the positive feedback.

If anyone is interested, we will be running the F200 Ti-VCT Sigma powered car at Silverstone on the 27th March.  Anyone interested in a passenger ride in this, please let me know.

  3. Hi JNC,

I don't think anyone fits a Duratec with a standard Ford flywheel, I believe Caterham already fit a lightweight flywheel which suits a standard size clutch.  However i can supply flywheels to suit smaller clutches similar to what we offer for the Sigma.  On the Sigma it makes a big difference and transforms the engine making it much more responsive.

I have fitted a 2.3 Duratec racecar with an ultralight flywheel which ran a 5.5" dual plate clutch.  This isn't a cheap upgrade and requires a different starter motor.  This also allows you to run a shallower bellhousing meaning you don't have the leading edge of the bellhousing hanging down below the dry sump.  This gives you more ground clearance or allows you to run the car lower.  This isn't really an upgrade for the road, more track or race car.

  4. New piston and con-rod assemblies (x4) removed from new engine.  Currently no piston rings although these can be supplied at extra cost if required.  These are perfect for someone with a R300, R400, Supersport R or 420R that has damaged their bottom end.  New crankshaft is currently on ebay but if that doesn't sell I'll put that on here as well.

Looking for £200 for the pistons and con-rods.

  5. Hi cr500dom,

Great idea ......but you can't do this on the Sigma.

Neither the cam sprockets, crank damper pulley or crank sprocket are doweled or key wayed onto the shafts.  As soon as you undo the crank damper pulley bolt, the crank can turn, or the crank sprocket can turn.  The damper pulley needs to be removed to remove the lower belt cover to get access to the belt.

We always measure cam timing before and after the belt has been replaced and sprocket retaining bolts have been tightened to ensure it back as it was.

  6. Hi Markymark,

We charge £200 inc vat, inc the belt and bolts required.  The cam timing needs to be measured accurately before dis-assembly and then checking after the belt and bolts have been changed.

Customers are can stay and watch us do this and those that have, have commented that they are glad they haven't attempted this themselves.

There are a lot of experts on here who I don't think have the kit to set this up as required.  Because cam pullies and crank sprockets aren't doweled on or keywayed, this means measurements need to be taken before bolts are removed and re-torqued.

We normally offer to do this job on a Saturday morning, it takes about 4 hours to do.

What a great day yesterday.  A massive thank you to the team for organizing this.  Two great circuits, an amazing back drop and I don't know how you sorted the weather!!

Yesterday was my first time at Anglesey.  I've driven several circuits, Donington, Hethel (very good), Silverstone GP, Brands GP, Snetterton before it was changed (ok showing my age) and Abingdon.  I have to say I think Anglesey is one of..... if not the best.  It's well worth the trip.

    Thanks Guys.

  8. Hi All,

Has anyone near Banbury or Northampton got a spare 125 Sigma throttle body with the throttle cable bracket on?

Just put an engine in my car for testing on the rolling road on Tuesday and the bracket is missing.  Only need the bracket but if you've got a complete throttle body I'm happy to remove the bracket and refit it after Tuesday.

Please call Stuart on 07712 530858.

    Thanks

  9. Hi All,

I have a customer abroad with an engine running problem that I'm travelling over to see on Saturday 16th May.  Would anyone living near Banbury allow me to borrow a couple of "known" parts that I could take with me and try on his car?  Parts I'm looking for are Sigma 125 ECU, engine wiring harness and a throttle body with the TPS sensor set and air temp sensor fitted.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Customers car is less that 12 months old.

    Regards

  10. Hi All,

Just registered for my first Lotus7club trackday at Hethel on the 28th and looking forward to it. Track looks amazing on some of the you-tube clips I've seen.

Not sure if this is something the club normally do but other organisations publish lists of who's going and what car they will be driving, just for interest so I thought I'd start one. If attending, I look forward to seeing you their.

  11. Hi All,

The Sigma, as a road engine is designed to be assembled as quickly as possible on a production line using setting tools and gauges to accurately set the cam timing.

The issue you have here is that the 140 Sigma doesn't use standard cams and hence I'm not sure how Caterham set the cam timing (whether they use a gauge plate in the rear of the cam at TDC or not).

None of this would be an issue if you didn't have to remove the crank damper pulley from the front of the engine. This is held in place with a bolt that is extremely tight as it not only retains the damper pulley but also clamps the crank drive sprocket for the timing belt. In the process of loosening the damper pulley alone, cam timing can be altered. Altered cam timing can not only mean a lose of power but can lead to very serious engine damage if pistons and valves should meet at high speed!!

This is partly why we remove and leave off the belt covers on our engines so that cam belts can be changed easily and quickly. A belt change on one of our engines should take any longer than 15 minutes. I know there are those out there that will say "well what about stones in the cam belt". My answer to that is stay on the black stuff and you shouldn't have a problem.

Back to the original topic, basically if you have a 140 Sigma, get the cam belt changed by Caterham or if you want us to do it, we'll have to measure all the cam settings before we remove the belt so we can accurately reset it with the new belt.

    Regards

  12. Hi Jeremy,

Threaded boss welded on sump as bulb on end of Racetech gauge is too large to go through the center of the standard Ford sump plug as used on the Sigma cast sump. Also Capillary gauge does away with electronic pressure sensor. This is a fit and forget solution and doesn't get in the way when carrying out oil services. Gauge also has a light in the back for visibility at night.

    Regards
