  1. Thanks everyone for all your replies. So basically once the new diff unit is in (if it needs a complete unit), overfill with oil and use a teflon lubricant . Then I guess the rest involves regular oil level checks and a bit of good ol' lady luck. Very interestingly, I have recently fitted A021R's and immediately noticed a humming/bicycle tyre type of whine. This noise is however completely different to the whine coming from the back of the car which is MUCH louder, higher pitched and you can hear it coming specifically from the back of the car. It is also linked to acceleration and is worse in 4th and 5th gears and at higher speeds. You can clearly hear it doing 70mph, which means it must be LOUD. ❗ From what people have said, I'm pretty certain it's the diff (or the bearings in the diff ). Any thoughts on whether the extra grip of the A021R's may have put increased stress on the axle, perhaps causing this problem? Moff PS If you haven't tried the A021R's on the track yet, suggest you do. I went to Goodwood with another 7 and the difference in grip levels (dry) was amazing. Where the 'ditchfinders' squeal and slide, the A021R's just grip - even a full mid corner lift off at Lavant (in a bit too fast) only produced a momentary rear end moment before the tyres dug in to the tarmac. 😬
  2. My car has done just under 6,000 miles and I recently took it to Goodwood for my first ever track day - brilliant 😬. Towards the end of the day it developed a whine, eminating from the rear of the car. I have been informed (though the car hasn't yet been checked) that this is likely to be the differential unit in the live axle and that this is a weakness of the live axle . In addition to this, apparently sourcing diff units for the axle is very difficult (in road spec). My axle is, I think, from an old Morris Ital (is that right? Classic, supersprint VX 1800)) . After only 6,000 miles and on its first track day, I'm really disappointed with this. Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Does anyone know anything about sourcing differential units and how easy/hard this is? Any help will be really appreciated. I'll be damned if I'm going to do another track day if this is going to happen everytime
  3. Yep A021R's. 18-20psi 'cold' I presume?
  4. When I ordered mine, I ticked the 1800vx option. All I can say is that in a straight line sprint vs a 130bhp 'tuned' 1600vx down a runway strip, I started from 30 yards behind and overtook the 1600 well before the end of the runway...(2nd gear rolling start) Moff
  5. I'm doing the same trackday. Anyone got any thoughts on the best pressures are for Yoko AO21s 185/60's? Moff

    Tyres

I own a Classic 1800 Vauxhall Supersprint. It's a great car, but with the live axle and the standard tyres being rather slippery, it can be a little excitable on some of my favourite bumpy back roads which can be a nerve wracking affair (particularly if it's damp). I've also had a couple of 'moments' when overtaking on slightly damp/greasy roads, fortunately all recovered in time. All this has got me thinking about what I can do to sharpen the car up a little, particularly as I'm planning on doing a track day this year, but mainly really for road use. My guess is that the tyres are the key area to be addressing in the first instance? I have the standard classic minilite 13" wheels and standard tyres, Avon fuelsavers - I think. Has anyone got any recommendations with regards to a good dry and wet road tyre? Also does anyone recommend any other tweaks that I can do to sharpen things up a little (brakes, suspension, engine etc)? I don't want to go mad, as I think the car is great as it is, but the tyres definitely need some serious attention. Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Just wondering if anyone has any worldly advice on what kind of things I should take (spares/tools etc.) and what checks I should make before I go on a 4 day jaunt to France. I own an 1800 VX Classic which is just over a year old. This is my first trip abroad in the car. Any advice welcome. Thanks. Moff
  8. I'm considering doing a track day or two and am planning to fit a fire extinguisher to my seven. Can anyone help me with two questions: 1) Where is the best place to buy an extinguisher suitable for a seven (something that does the job but is not too expensive)? 2) Where is the best place to fit it in the car (I have a VX 1800 Classic Sprint)? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.
