  1. Those who sell tyres will tell you it is a 'nono' most of us who have to pay for them and the law say differently.

A club sprint championship winner ran radial on one axle and xply on the other at a track day and reported no issues. The law does NOT like this scenario.

  2. My X-flow was a heavy 'smoker' from the engine breather, a common problem I was told. The solution was to fit a breather filter in the line higher than the outlet. The oil would 'condense' on the gauze and drip back down the tube into the engine. There was always some smoke but no oily mist. It was a Chrysler/Roots Avenger part that was recommended at the  time.

I may still have the part number somewhere, if you would like me to search let me know.

  3. Gearbox to engine out of the car is the easiest.

A load leveler  https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cll500-load-leveller/  will help when inserting the whole unit.

Remember to loosen the filler plug before you get the gearbox back in.

Do not forget to bolt the gearbox mounting (the right way round) to the gearbox when it is out of the car.

I have always used a funnel with a length of flexible tubing attached to fill the gearbox. When you have finished just push the end of the tube into the funnel to 'seal' it and it will clean and ready for next time. There is always a next time.

  4. Hi Adrian,

I have the  Cat from a K series SLR for sale. It is 4 in, to one out. I do not know if it is suitable but you could mention it during your enquiries.

If you need more measurements let me know.

    Regards Malcolm.

  5. Hi G,

The mark on wheel one looks suspiciously like unprotected clamping jaws. A friend has just had the same issue with a local fitter and was advised that it was normal. They claimed that with protection the wheel would not be clamped enough to remove the tyre. My opinion is 'B----cks'. It is just slipshod and lazy.

It is best to ask if their equipment will mark the rims and explain that you do not want any damage to any part of the rim prior to fitting. QuickFit Scarborough were asked before they fitted tyres to my Volvo and did a good job. I could see the fitter put protective pads on the clamp.

My other tip is to stay and watch.

I think the positioning and fit of the weights is another indicator that 'care' was one of the missing elements to the fitters work ethic.

Go back and complain quietly and politely ask for your money back.

  6. Me again. Another thought. If the 'king pin' or macpherson strut is bent then as it rotates between the top swivel point and the bottom swivel point the hub would not rotate evenly about the axis and thus cause uneven/different steering compared to the other side.

Sorry if not explaining very well, blatmail me if you need more.

  7. Hi C,

If there is no drag on the wheel rotation to cause the steering to turn so quickly then my, admittedly, limited common sense says something is broken/lose. When you go forward the steering angle is changed one way and when you go back the natural forces exerted on the steering send it back. Can you get under the car while someone pushes the car back and forward with you holding and feeling each joint in the steering and suspension in turn?

    love m

  8. 'the steering wheel gets turned 90 degrees to the left when going forwards just a few yards and about the same to the right when going backwards'

This sounds like a broken/lose/bent track control arm. There may also be a problem in the rack that you can not see where something is again broken/lose/bent.
