  1. Simon, all fair points in favour of simpson but cost will sway it for me especially as need to buy new helmet too, although might change mind when try HANS on.

All advice gratefully received, see what you mean but think i need to get some alternative top hat bushes or else turn the ones i have down to give a longer inside collar, I've got a bush going in from either side of plate to allow swivel.

  2. Mike, you're right the bolts are 7/16 unf, so i'm wondering if the larger dia hole is to allow for the stepped bushings that allow for swivel.

Jeff, Grade 8 imagine, not had a chance to mock up in garage yet so not sure what lengths to go for, but suggestion is that plate is made from 3 or 4mm steel so allowing for harness lug, bushings and nut would imagine an inch long would be sufficient. Although I'm considering whether to weld a boss in under each hole to spread the load a bit - just because i've had too many pies - so would need to go longer on bolts.

Simon, if I'm going to have enough left of upgrade budget for some of your trick shocks then it's going to be HANS for me, 3rd of price of Simpson as far as I can see, unless you know otherwise?

  3. Thanks for replies, will give bmtr a call tomorrow then - probably giving away a24 zzr's!

Sorry Nigel, looks like off to class 6 but will watch your times on 1b with interest.

Rob, my understanding was 6 will be effectively road going except for the 1c's which puts us in modprod so need a FHR, thought you already had one so wondering if I've missed your point?

Mark, you're right, too much trouble.

  4. Spoilt for choice so wondering what other class 5 & 6 competitors are planning to do next year?

First choice would be to stay on zzr's so class 6 to gauge if make any progress on this year. But also wouldn't mind giving slicks a go which might work better for other championship. As would 1b's and not too bothered about less grip.

Prefer to make numbers up in well supported class and have something to chase so will follow the crowd.

Tyres down to canvas so need to know what to order?

  5. Would add QED Motorsport to list of suppliers, handy website, search under c20xe, and helpful if need advice.

As mentioned there a 2 types of timing belt, round tooth type for earlier engine block and square tooth type for later, would suggest from age of yours that it will be later square tooth type. But when i pulled my engine out last month found it to be a mix and match with earlier coscast head and later block, so as well to pull cambelt cover and take a look - SBD guide here -. Would recommend that repalce water pump and pulleys while about it, especially if don't know when last done, can purchase a cam belt kit which has everything you need.

QED provide stuff like filters, belts and gaskets too but worth making note of part numbers as remove them and keep a record for next time, most can be sourced through local motor factors just stick with reputable brands.

    Good luck.

  6. Sorry to hear anglesey was a disapointment, spent day at Kames sprint instead but felt sure was missing out especially since the corkscrew had been added in this year.

The event Simon refers to was the first weekend in September and is run by MG Owners club. Attended the last few years now and always well organised with double lap clubman on Saturday and single lap international on Sunday, and always managed the full 2 practice and 2 timed runs. Very well subscribed, but maybe a bit less so this year, to point were need to get entries in early i.e. May/June to stand chance. So wonder if another 30 or so l7c competitors would be a sqeeze.

Good idea to be at end of season though becuase Anglesey is a tyre killer, normally grateful for a re-run but fronts were molten after one on the Saturday, definitely better suited to Khumos.

  7. Evening Paul

Had the same issue myself which led to frequent blow out of rears, twice on one journey which was interesting with only one spare. Fix is straight forward and involves adding spacers between trailer frame and the coupling/winch bracket so effectively pushing the nose down if the hitch height remains unchanged. Easy enough to fabricate some but Brian James sell them, seem to remember not cheap especailly if you need a few layers as I did. Don't remember exactly how thick the spacers are, think quarter inch, but if you have idea of how much you need to drop the front of trailer by then sure BJ will advise. Will also need to repalce original bolts with longer ones. It's a pretty straight forward job to do. Will not be at Anglesey otherwise could have let you take a look but could send you photos if that would be any help, just let me know?

    Cheers Graham

  8. Les,

Not qualified to offer advice but do share your pain after an equally frustrating Harewood weekend. We both probably know the answer that it's probably at least 90% driver - the truth hurts. Going to sort out some driver training for the new year so will let you know.

If you've got a 12v socket in car we can swap my dataloger between runs at Kames. Found it very insightful but there is still the probelm of knowing what needs to be done and then actually putting it into practice to overcome.

Chin up and have a chuckle at my last run on Sunday, what could've been.

See you at Kames and let's hope it stays dry.

    Cheers

    Graham

  9. Prefer this one here but not sure that halfords stock mann&hummel, but local motor factor likely will, usually buy a few at a time so always have one to hand due to beinging ocd about oil changes.

This car started life as a 1700 Supersprint converted during my ownership to 1.8 Zetec with Raceline alternator kit and Raceline sump. This car has literally been part of my life for 13 years and we have done so many things together and  I have made so many friends because of the car. I am very reluctantly selling to pay for something newer, a lot less engaging but more sensible for my later years. It’s time to pass this old war horse on to someone else who will treasure it and drive it like they stole it.

Not a polishers car and won’t win any concourse events, but will provide hours of huge entertainment at a fraction of the cost of higher spec machines.

The car is MOT’d until May 2016

  11. There is a local hillclimb on the Saturday which I like to support and so the 10/11 hour round trip to Epynt for the Sunday only is just a bit too much of a schlep - tried it last year and Monday was a write off.
