UPDATE - Thanks everyone for help and replies and retracing the work i have done on the engine , it seems that when the sump was removed to have the sump reduced in depth to clear speed humps, it appears that the oil pipe pipe is being 'kissed ' on rotation by the con rod bolt very slightly and just needs easing gently out of position. The rest of the engine has been checked top and bottom and sounds fine with no other knocks or taps . Im taking the sump off this week and will update all on findings.

Hi All I am hard of hearing and struggling to diagnose the following problem certainty. I have a 1600 Xflow circa 6000 miles and only 800 miles since purchase last may , following coolant issues that includes overheating and loss of coolant , head gasket changed and at the moment engine running sweet as a sewing machine, no blue or white smoke from exhaust , compressions all at 180 PSI , oil consumption ok , starts and runs fine and goes super quick, timing at 10 deg Tappets have been adjusted and am told they give a quiet chatter Since replacing the head gasket a muted non metallic tapping noise is heard in area of cylinders 2& 3 - some say this is bottom end bearings ( little ends) - but how can this be when i only changed the head gasket ? I have had comments such as the head gasket may be misplaced or wrong size to bores causing the pistons to hit the edges of the gasket making the tapping noise as it increases/decreases with revs . Any thoughts and experiences as don't really want to pull the engine out unless absolutely sure its bottom end. Thanks in advance all

Hi All Happy New Year Does anyone have any build notes/photos list of parts along with key issues to note when swapping engine over from a Ford Xflow to a Lotus Twin Cam - it appears fairly straightforward but before i tear it apart - it would be useful to have some notes,photos or details of the key areas to note/watch out for. I have just updated the cooling system by installing a new header tank at the bulkhead end of the engine bay as high as it would go and want to replace the special thermostat housing fitted with thermostat sensor boss, and main coolant pipe along with small diameter take off pipe and fitted with static radiator cap with a plain thermostat housing with small diameter hose take off pipe ( similar to the thermostat housing fitted to a MK1-2 fiesta . - see picture below ) - would this fit the 1600 xflow head ? Can any one help please as following installation of the new header tank along with overflow recuperator bottle water escaped out of the existing thermostat housing non vented radiator cap !!! This might be due to a airlock in system as coolant temp does not overheat -or boil over at all

After months of coping with coolant escaping from expansion tank , have decided to fit a header tank with separate expansion tank /recuperator bottle . My question is is there any technical reason why the header tank feed can't be connected to the small hose take off at the top of the water pump body rather than a small diameter hose takeoff on the bottom radiator hose. My guess is this makes no real difference as water is circulated in right direction around the system. Thanks in advance and appreciate feedback

The original sump pan on my XFlow has been bashed a bit by PO and finally decided to leak. im told the XFlow should be fitted with a alloy flat bottom sump pan and does anyone have one for sale or know where I can source the part please, or advise of alternative parts ?? I'm not intending to race the car so the dry sump option is not ideal or practical any help / contacts appreciated thanks in advance

all sorted and powerspark confirmed that their advise not to fit the white/black wire from the tacho to the negative side of the coil was a typo and it should have read , yes this can be fitted on negative side of the coil. So far all running well and tacho needle does not bounce around at all.

Hi Jonathan i too couldn't find a wiring diagram from power spark regarding the tach , but have emailed them - I've taken pictures of the wiring on back of tach and can send these over if that helps , plus I've emailed power spark regarding this and yet to receive a reply thanks

Update car now starts and it was the Powerspark module that had failed , and now have a loose wire to the tachometer which cannot be connected to minus side of coil anyone had any experience of this issue and understand an inline resistor has to be fitted and then wire fro tachometer (white /black ) cane be connected to plus side coil -is this correct ? im hoping the powerspark unit is robust , but unit is very simple etc thanks all

Recently fitted a new distributor - converted from Bosch - to Lucas 23d unit with electronic ignition , car ran fine during setting timing session until switched off , now no spark, voltage is to coil ( which is now un-ballasted) , no spark to plug on block test, cranks over ok, have checked and checked , wiring all seems connected ok - what has gone wrong ? plus the oil pressure gauge flicks to high reading when switch on ignition mode - this has never happened before ( electronic oil sender switch fitted) - could this be the earth fault? All ignition components new Checked timing again and noticed that on TDC No 1 valves closed and rotor pointing to 1& 2 inlet - is that correct ? Being a new member and first time owner of Caterhams - have been making contact with anyone and no reply so far - must be something simple - bad earth, loose wire under dash perhaps ( checked this even though not worked under dash as part of operation) I am based in Leicestershire - anyone close by who can have a look over and spot anything missing, incorrect as im going potty and missing this fine weather so far. Thanks in advance for any info help or experiences and solutions appreciated
