  1. Hello I am trying to make the car more "road" friendly without killing the fun of it all. Our roads are twisty, slow (max 50mph) The car is powered by a 2 liter zetec that has from 100 ft lb/2300rpm to 147ft lb/7600rpm. I have a6 speed caterham gearbox and my diff is 3.62. I am thinking of changing the diff to an 3.38 ratio. I love the car in slow motion, cruising along with a smile on my face... and I like the fact that if I gear down it´l scream along quite happily.. If I change to the 3.38 my guess is that for the cruising the car will be much quieter, and if I do want to let it loose I still have 6 gears to choose from. Any thoughs? Should I stay with the 3.62 (wich is a quiet one) or should I change to a longer 3.38? I do not track the car, and if I would I think it still would be fast enough? Kenneth
  2. Jonathan I was thinking of the wedge/bracket more like a "ski" jump style of height adjustment. If I use the car with the seat fully back then I´m at the lower setting. If the seat is at the front, then it will be on top of the "jump" and the seat would be higher.
  3. Maybe a long shot, and you have probably tried it. But have you checked your earthing? I had similar problems, the car misfired. When I checked, and corrected my earthing, everything was ok afterwards. Kenneth
  4. Yes, maybe I should try telling her that ... :) she is a little bit afraid of the car 200+/500+kg... but I think I´m more afraid of her :) I have to try a test bracket without changing the floor just to se if the headrest will stop the seat
  5. Jim 123 I will have to "try" to see if the seat will run as planned before I swap the florpanels. Would not want my wife to "not like" to drive the car. Today she likes to drive the car. Maybe because us guys dont expect a woman driving such a "toy". And of course it is a fun car, as you all know. A little bit on the noisy side, but still. Changed from 3.92 to 3.62 or so.. and the noise lowered alot. The original diff was all wrong setup and was screaming from 30mph.... Elie boone I´m not shure if I want a cage. Maybe if I could have one like I have today, one that I can screw onto the roll bar, then I should be allright
  6. Hm... The have thought about the booster seat..... but... have not the guts to ask my wife to sit in a makeshift seat... with plastic padding and foam.. Just think about this: " Honey. can you please sit here so that I can make a mould of your bum?" :) Have you tried that aproach? he he Think I will try the bracket first, see how it goes. Will report back here with pictures :)
  7. Hello rj I live in Bergen, Norway. On the west coast of Norway. Unfortunately to far to drive even for a Caterham :) about 1000km one way. I am thinking of making a wedge/bracket under the seat runner. This will have to raise the seat in the forward position, and lower it in the aft position The "tilt" I was thinking of is like this:
  8. Jonathan Because of the narrow top of the roll bar a half hood would bee to narrow, and I think water would "slip" in between the doors and the half hood. I am thinking of raising the front of the seat rail. (tilting the seat a little back). This way I think that when my wife want to drive and we push the seat forward it moves upward. And if I want to drive (and I always want to drive just to have a laugh) then the seat will be lowered down to the lowered floor. At least the back of the seat. The seat would of corse be a little tilted backwards. More like the driving style of the young peoples, but hopefully not that much. What do you think? Am I on the wrong track or would this be an good compromise? Best Regards Kenneth
  9. Hello, and thanks for all help I think my car is an long cockpit imperial s3 with de-dion rear. Have the wats linkage at the rear. My roll bar is not original and to narrow at the top. I want to be able to use an half hood on the car (rainy climate) and need to change to an original one. Not sure what type of chassis I have. I think I have a Imperial one from about 2005. I do have a rollbar today that I can mount a roll-cage onto. This is a little narrow at the top. I am also thinking of changing to a lowered floor, but need to make a bracket for the seat runner so that my wife (160cm high) can use the car. I am 185cm high. Am thinking of building something that raises the seat in the front posistion, and lowers it if I am driving the car.
  10. Hello I am going to change my roll bar into an trackday rollbar. My roll bar is an "home made" one that is not a good fit for an half hood. I have been waiting for caterham parts to get these in house, but it looks like it will take ages. Is there other places to buy these? Best Regards Kenneth
  11. Hello again and thanks for the answers. I have sent a mail to softbits with the measurements. I have tried to find the "normal" height on a roll bar. I think that my roll bar is "home made", both thicker and more angled towards the middle. Will have a look to se if I can find the measurements on other bars. BR Kenneth
  12. Hello I am trying to find the correct "name" for my roll bar. I wan´t to buy the half hood and am trying to find the correct verson. My roll bar looks like the picture below. I have 90cm from window to top centre of the bar. My rollbar is 127cm from left to right (on top of the bar) and it is 43 cm on top (where the bends start) The heigh is 33cm from the seatbelt bolts to the top of the bar. I am thinking that the bar is to low? Should I maybe change to another one? Maybe change to lowered floor. (I am 185cm high, but my wife is 160cm high) Best Regards Kenneth Mula
  13. Hello all Got a 7/32 ( plus some other imperial tools) from the local shop. The other side did come of :) The stuck one had the allen bolt broken (cracked). Tried to veld another bolt onto this one. But the allen bolt broke of. Then there was only one thing to do, cut the damper off with an angle grinder. After a little while the damper was loose at last. "hurray!!!" Now the next question is what to do with my damper/spring setup. I have to stiff springs, so these have to be swapped to more appropriate ones. My front damper is to short so I need to have them serviced. Or I can swap these for a set of tractive 3 way dampers with the right springs. Have tried to google any caterham/tractive comination, but have not found anything yet. Guess they are much better than my seup, but still the price is nearly the double. Anyway.. thanks for your help so far :)
  14. Hello again Thanks you all for the help. I will try the pluss gas (or something equivalent). I guess I have an imperial chassis then because the allen key has an 7/32 head. I live in Norway and had to get one to try. I have a hydraulic handbrake on the car, and Have been trying to find the place where the original handbrake is to be mounted. Is there a "race" chassis without this? I haven't been able to find where I should mount a handbrake lever. Today I have an hydraulic one, and I don´t think I am going to go "rallying" anytime soon and would prefer a "normal" handbrake. The dampers are ohlins, but I have talked to SImon at meteor sport and he tels me that the dampers are to short, and the springs are to hard. When I put my foot down, and wheels spinns the car starts to "jump" I won´t do doughnuts, but I don´t like the "jumping" of my rear wheels. Am thinking of swapping the ohlins to the tractive 3 way dampers. Anybody tried these? Here is a picture of the engine bay, and if I am correct the car is imperial. Had a gearbox service and removed the engine. :)
  15. Hello I have an 1987 caterham with (I think) a swapped frame. I think It is an imperial one because; "lower horizontal chassis tube in the rear wheel arch, the one that the rear ARB is bolted to. If it's round for the full length, it's imperial" I am having trouble getting the damper bolt off my lower wishbone at the front wheels. And think I have to get a new set. I think I have a widetrack front. Is there a way to measure what I have, and find the right one to order? I have Ohlins dampers with springs that is 64N/mm (365Pounds/inch).. and I need to get new softer springs Hope some of you know how I can find the correct one to buy :)
  16. Hello I found the fault. Need to replace the Main chaft 2nd gear and the sync hub. :) Was not the result I hoped, but as long as the box will be ok :)Thanks for all help.
  17. Hello again I live in Norway, so the trip to Phil is a little to far away :) But I have thought about sending the box over to Phil. I have had the box in to a guy that´s good with gearboxes, and he did run the gearbox on the bench. He could not find any fault, and I am hoping somebody have had a similar problem. It feel like something is sticking so that the gear won´t go in all the way. It slips out of gear when I release the clutch. How hard should the stick feel when I change from gear? The gearlever looks like the one that Caterham sells, but it is somewhat turned against me (LHD). Could it bee the gearchanging rod, forks or something? Kenneth
  18. Hello I am having trouble with my 6 speed gearbox, and cant find the fault. I am having occasional trouble engaging the 2nd gear (downshift).Sometimes the gear do not engage properly, and jumps out of gear (I let go of the stick before I release the clutch). When I look into the box, all looks good, and I can´t provoke the fault. All gears go in as they should. It seems that the problem occurs only when I am driving, and downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Could It be the selector locking plate sticking? Do anybody know how wide the slot in the cover should be? Mine is about 6.1mm and the plate is 6mm. I have changed the gear selector saddle bush. Could it be the gear selector that is somewhat bent? How much force should I use when engaging the gears? I guess that the short shift stick needs a little more force to get the gears in. Should I try to change the gearstick? Best Regards Kenneth
  19. Hello LOL.. yes.. hopefully I don´t drive my car that far out :) Trying again.. https://www.jottacloud.com/p/kentan/7fd5b4caf1f5412ea1ecb542626b1966 https://www.jottacloud.com/p/kentan/7fd5b4caf1f5412ea1ecb542626b1966 Br Kenneth a little embarrased.. but.. it could have been worse..
  20. Hello again Thanks for the answers. I have uploaded a video of me driving over the mountain i Norway. There you can hear the sound I am talking about. I know that the seven isn´t a silent car, and it shouldn´t be :). But I have to wear ear protection all the time.. Anybody knows if I can use 7.5" bearings and kits on the 7" diff? https://www.jottacloud.com/p/kentan/09dc636215a34c3abdad2421bf9748a3 https://www.jottacloud.com/p/kentan/09dc636215a34c3abdad2421bf9748a3 Best Regards Kenneth
  21. Hello I have a 7" diff that is quite noisy. Rumbling noises when on acceleration, and a different noise when off the pedal. If I press the clutch pedal the noise disappears. I am going to replace the u-joints but I think the noise is from the differential. I have been looking for a bearing kit (rebuild kit) for the 7" diff but I am having trouble finding any. Can I use the bearingkit for the 7.5" diff? Could the noise be that the backlash is wrong? Hoping for advice. I am living in Norway (west coast) and there are not many caterhams here. Best Regards Kenneth Mula Bergen, Norway
