  1. Thanks Chris/Paul Quite different views! By the sound of it, could be that it depends on the damper (i.e. whether it has the nut connecting the mount). Unfortunately - it looks like mine does not - so I end up with Paul's issue. In which case, how do you compress the spring? Or is it more generally recommended I get a garage to do it? Thanks Tom
  2. So......been worried about my clearance for a while, finally worked out I should have had damper extensions fitted (confirmed by Derek, 12 months after my car passed its IVA!). Any tips on how to fit them, in particular: (i) How do i get existing heads off the damper (is it straightforward)? (ii) What torque does the extension need to go to? (iii) Other threads suggest that Bilstein fit them with Loctite - is this necessary? (iv) Any other useful tips? Reallyannoying! Thanks! Tom
  3. Just an update in case anybody searches. Caterham confirmed that you need to fit the "special" steering column. Shame they do not say this in the manual or IVA guidance........
  4. Thanks all. I have played safe and just swapped it over. A lot easier than I thought. Better to be safe than sorry, any other tips of unexpected things?
  5. Hi All I have my IVA (finally) on Friday, yeah! Has anybody recently taken a car with a quick release steering through? My question is because Jon at Millwood has provided me with a spare "fixed" steering column and suggested I fixed it instead of the quick release for the IVA. However, I have not seen anybody else mention this nor is it suggested in the manual, therefore given the other jobs I need to do to get it finished I would rather not do it if not necessary. Thoughts and experiences? Any other recent IVA advice not in the Caterham manual/IVA advice sheet? thanks! Tom
  6. Is it the 32mm bolt in the LHS or the smaller one on the RHS if I want to drain the oil and replace it?
  7. Good news, managed to get the bolt out with a quite a few "technical taps" with my rubber hammer! Now need to work out what to do with the rivnut.....trying superglue to see if that gives enough friction to get it going, then may leave it out. Thanks for all of the help!
  8. Yes, that may be the ultimate solution!
  9. Thanks both Yes, tried leveraging the back of the bolt with a paid of pliers whilst unscrewing - that did not work Cannot get to the back of the rivnut as within the body. I might try tonight to see if there is enough space to grip the front of the rivnut. Small damage to the skin paint there should not be an issue as covered by the wing....
  10. No easy access to the back to grind as the wing gets in the way. Perhaps 10cm gap only as the bolt is still in place.
  11. Yes, exactly, like a rivnut inserted into the body side.
  12. I have managed to cross-thread one of the holes that my wing attaches onto and wondering if any tips of how to get the bolt in or out? Firstly not a major issue, as the wing is very firmly attached with all of the other bolts, so this is just to get is absolutely right (I like to do a proper job). The bolt is the one right at the bottom at the front of the rear wing. I have managed (!) to cross-thread the bolt so it is only half in, but now it will not bind to either come out or go in further. Any ideas on how to either get it to bind in, or how to get it out, so I can try again?

    BigHeads

Thanks - I have sent them an email asking for more specs - as there is no size on the website - no response yet. I noted on Daniel's excellent blog he used the 16mm x 15mm size, so was hoping to get the same.... http://www.caterhamr500.co.uk/2014/03/build-day-twenty-seven-front-cycle.html Have you/anybody bought them from this website so I could be sure they would the rigth size? Thanks! Tom

    BigHeads

Hi All I decided to go down the "BigHead" route to attach my cycle wings. However, minimum order size seems to be 25 (at a rather high cost!). Anybody got any spare ones they would like to sell, anybody also looking at this solution and want to split the cost of a bulk buy, or does anybody know where you can get them in lower quantities? Thanks! Tom
  15. So having struggled with my better half at the weekend, this was a much more difficult job than I expected. Therefore, anybody got any tips on how best to install? The two tips I have already learnt: 1) Make sure your propshaft is the right size (yes, Derek confirmed this morning I have the wrong one.....cannot be delivered until after Christmas ) 2) Use the jack to take the weight. As I now have 2 weeks until I start again....any more tips please?
  16. Thanks John It is good and tight - so I think I will see how it goes when it gets to start up. yes, I got from Millwood - Jon has been brilliant. cheers tom
  17. Yes - it is threaded at the top - I think due to me putting the nut on not straight (doh!). Therefore it is ok if I exclude the spring washer (ie there is enough thread left for the connectors and the nut, not if I include the washer). if I include this then there is not enought thread? Therefore, if not thread lock - any other ideas? thnks tom
  18. OK - managed to get the wires on the terminal post and tight if I did not use the spring washer - used some tread lock instead - will this be ok?
  19. not having a good afternoon... ...tried to start my electrics and have managed to thread the terminal on the starter motor so the nut will now not tighten. anything that I can do? thanks tom
  20. Hi All Just got my engine in my SSR - yeah! i have a quick electrical questions, and seeing as it is bank holiday...where does the black earth cable that I have attached to the engine/chassis mount attach to in the engine? Thanks! tom
