andy couchman
What is it for? (the big nut on the steering rack) Does it adjust the slack in the rack? If so, if you undo it a bit presumably the steering is less stiff? Andy
Sheds Moderator
No, DO NOT DO THIS! It is for setting the preload on the rack but DO NOT mess about with it unless you know what you are doing. If you jack the front wheels up is the steering still stiff?
V7 SLR
The big nut is a lock nut for the allen bolt in the middle. It's the allen bolt that adjusts the preload on the rack. If you can't find a bit enough spanner for the large nut, Halford sell a Ford Viscous Fan spanner which is exactly the right size. Sykes Pickavent (sp?). Adjust with front wheels in the air. That way you can tell when you've tightened it up enough to reduce slack to the minimum without introducing any binding. Adjustment between slack and binding is very small. Chelspeed
Only use it when you fail the MOT for play in the steering. Not too complex to adjust but quite important you don't get it too tight
