SPW
My car has suddenly developed a "clunk" when I rock the steering from side to side while stationary. I've checked that all the obvious connections on the steering column are tight and there is no evidence of any wear in trackrods etc. There is however a slight back and forward movement (no more than about a millimeter) of the complete steering column which coincides with the clunk - this movement shows itself at the rack output spline and at the business end in the cockpit (QR wheel - 2000 Superlight). Any ideas on what the problem could be? Steve
shn7
Have you checked: 1 - UJ at the rack end it done up. 2 - Big lock nut on top of rack hasn't come loose. This can allow the huge grub screw to move and result in plat in the steering. 3 - Rack is tightened down. 4 - Clamp near the top of the column in front of the scuttle is secured properly. Slacken off the lock nut and ensure the grub screw is tight then re-tighten the lock nut. Steve.
SPW
Thanks Steve. Have checked UJ at rack and the connection at top of steering column but not the nut on the rack. I'll check this tonight! Steve
