Wheel Offsets and tyre sizes

Recommended Posts

I'm going to get a set of 13" Minilight style wheels for my Mk 1 Escort and I might as well make sure they can be used on my Seven (and put some decent tyres on).

What offsets should I be looking for for 13" x 6"? Is 6" a good width to go for? And what tyre sizes (it's a 1.8SS de Dion wide track). I have to see if I can fit 6" wide rims under the rear arches of the escort...

Has anyone got Superlights with a polished rim and coloured centre? How well do they last?

No idea on offsets as I just noted what car they were going on and it was sorted. I'll try and remember to have a look in the books I have.

Meanwhile, 13x6 is a good size to get IMO.

I have 185s up front and 205s at the rear. If you need to keep to the same size (if you have a spare) then I'd be inclined to get 185s. If you have lots of power and need the same size then 195s might be a better compromise (a std. 1800SS will be fine on 185s). If you can run diff. sizes then you *could* get 7" rears but it's not necessary (gives more scope for bigger rear tyres should you get heavy with power upgrades).

Again if you need a spare, you should go for something like an A021R which can be fitted on either side (I think) unlike the A032R which can't. Not sure if ACB10s are properly directional.

Polished rims. I don't have Superlites but I do have painted centres and polished rims.

With winter use the finish lasts approximately 5 minutes and they'll pit quite easily. They'll also get caked with salt etc on the inside of the rim.

If using it in winter, therefore, aim to take the wheels off regularly to get rid of deposits.

I didn't and as a result spent two days with ultra strength wheel cleaning gel, a very stiff brush and Autosol. And I now have back pain and muscular seizures in my right arm every 5 minutes! It's this sort of thing that can really dent enthusiasm (God only knows how you ali' bodied people cope!).

They did come up nicely again though, and after the pain eases and the black stuff disappears from your skin/nails you remember that they look the d's b's.

Should they ever get pitting that Autosol can't sort out, I'm sure a wheel place would be able to polish them decently for a tenner or so, so I'm not too fussed (I also have two piece wheels so could replace them if it was really necessary, but I doubt it will be for a while). But mine have lasted nicely for a good 18mths or so now, in all weathers.
