Dannyboy
Personally - I prefer the route up to Abergavenny, Builth Wells, Rhyader then up to llanidloes and across the mountains to Llanbrynmair, there are then two routes up to Dolgellau. The best bit of my weekly journey home from Abergaveeny is then the run through / under Snowdon turning off the A487 at the Oakeley Arms onto the B4410. This brings you into the back of Caernarfon. If taking my time to enjoy the drive - rarely - I'll then head north @ Beddgelert up to the Pan Y Pass to Llanberis. If 'making progress' in the tin top it's about 3h 20min from Abergavenny to Anglesey however I wouldn't recommend that as the scenery is stunning.
