Clutch slave cylinder, 87 Supersprint 1700

Today's mystery is that my clutch slave cylinder can move back and forth about 1/4", which robs the pedal of some of its travel. It has a cylindrical part that fits through a hole in a bracket, and this is where the longitudinal play occurs. I can't figure out how it is secured in this hole and what prevents more play than it has.

So the specific questions are:

  1. Is it really supposed to have this play?
  2. If not, how and where do I eliminate it?

Thanks in advance/Anker
