Fitting half doors

The ideal position for the top mounting points appear to require me to drill through the strengthening strip. If so I assume I will require extra long popper caps?

As I have a 'no sticks' boot cover it doesn't reach far enough forward for me to piggyback the rear fixing, therefore, I guess I'll have to drill a separate popper fixing about 25mm forward.

Has anyone used the strap fixing to hold the bottom of the half door like the standard one used on the full sidescreens? Here

If I plump for the poppers at the bottom are they straight into the Alu skin or do they pick up a chassis rail?

Yes, you will need to drill though the strengthening strip. Hold on tight if you don't want the drill to wander. A bench drill is best if you have one.

The poppers go straight through the skin - no need to find a chassis rail.

I used the inside popper with a strap, mainly to hold the screen tight to the chassis and stop splashes coming in off the stone guards.

You should have some lift-a-dot popper to stop the front edge unpopping at speed. The dot goes towards the front

I was just about to post a question asking for advice on fitting half doors!

Just picked up some new s/h Oxted Trimming half doors at a bargain price - jammy - complete with new poppers still to be fitted, but have never attempted something like this myself. Do I need any specialist tools or can you offer any top tips please?

Looks like my car - a 94 Super Sport - might have had half doors fitted in the past as I have the fixing points already on the car - or are these fitted as standard?

Anyone in Newbury/Thatcham area fancy popping popping over to offer guidance in exchange for some beers, please just say!

Thanks

Nick

Nick. There is a specialist tool for fitting the poppers to the vinyl (£150) or you can use a cheap version which is a dolly and cup affair. See Soft Bits for Sevens video here

I find that the sensible positioning of the top poppers is dead-centre of the strengthening bar, unfortunately, The rear is wider than the space available from wing to top of chassis. This means the rear has to fold against the wing a bit - does that make sense?  Not that I've actually fitted mine yet so 'll happily stand corrected.

Thundersport - I think I need to come over and have a chat and bring my existing tonneau which I want replicated in carbon effect vinyl.
