Front nearside wheel bearing play

Just servicing a Caterham Superlight SV R300, year 2003 and noted play at the 12 'o' clock and 6 'o' clock positions only, (9 and 3 Ok) on the front near side wheel. Is this likely to be adjustment (If possible and how), bearing replacement (Inner and/or outer), bearings and hub. If it is a bearing and/or hub replacement, is it necessary to do the front offside bearing/hub at the same time?

Thanks, David in Brighouse, West Yorks

Hi David, if someone holds the brake pedal down does the play go?

If not look at the top and bottom hub joints. Wheel bearing play can usually be felt at all angles.

With the wheel just off the ground put a lever under the tyre and try lifting the wheel vertically while looking at the top and bottom joints. Any movement? Sometimes it is easier to put your fingers between the joint and the stub axle and 'feel' for any play.

I have sent you a blatmail with my phone numbers in case you want to talk it through.

By for now, have fun.

Although it doesn't say it in the GTKY7 guide you should always spin the wheel a few times immediately after you have jacked it up on a Caterham and indeed any taper bearinged vehicle before testing the play at 6 and 12 o'clock to centre the bearing first.  Many vehicles that show play immediately after being jacked will lose some of it after the wheel has been spun. Its one of the things they teach MOT testers.
