Adding photo to profile

When I try to upload a jpeg as my profile pic, the following happens:

1. the pic show normally in the 'Picture' box, about the 'Delete picture' check box

2. at the same time, in a red box at the top of the page the following error message appears:

"The specified file temporary://160logo.jpg could not be copied, because no file by that name exists. Please check that you supplied the correct filename."

The pic appears as my avatar for that session. But on the next login, it's gone.

Any suggestions?

"Pictures larger than 1024x1024 pixels will be scaled down. " (Where do a find a quote format?)

My thumbnail image is 1024x686 and is scaled down to 800x800.  Can we include a comment than non square images will be cropped?

A 1024x1024 image is cropped too.

It needs to be absolutely clear whether pictures are being cropped or scaled. Either way, everyone will need a picture editor to get a square or 4x3 or 16x9 or other ratio image (not all pictures are amenable to all aspect ratios).

I will certainly revist many pictures to get the right shape with the right file size, to find one which is sympathetic to the space available.
