Mr Chips
Hi Could any one could give me the heads-up on wether it is recommended to remove residual oil in dry sump. (Duratec 2012 caterham system) I plan drain oil tank, no probs, but can not find a drainage bung for the sump? Is there a way of achieving this or not necessary. Many thanks
combine
There won't be one , I have a dry sumped vx and tend to undo the flexi pipe going from the bell housing to the front of the engine and then undo two allan key plugs on bottom of engine . Measure oil taken out to make sure you've taken most of it out and then you know what to replenish. Its all great fun , glad I've got a lift ! ECR
I've got a dry sumped VX also. Never really thought about it before but .... Why is there no drain plug in the sump (also on Duratec presumably) ? Is there a good reason for this apart from the obvious fact that if you don't have a sump plug, you don't run the risk of it falling out ..... It certainly makes oil changes on dry sump systems less than complete.
Mr Chips
Hi Combine & ECR Thanks for your reply. At a push I will follow you and remove a couple of allen bolts. Not too keen on removing oil hose as these were a pig to fit. Cheers
Dave Allen
Mr Chips. On my Duratec there is an allen screw on the left hand side of the sump which looks like it goes through a plate, this will drain the sump. Behind it is a bung and a gauze tube which acts as a filter. HTH can't supply a photo as my garage is frozen shut. 😔  Edited by - Dave Allen on 25 Mar 2013 17:53:
Mr Chips
Hi Dave Excellent! I did see this' but as it looked unusual was not sure what it was and did not want what I thought would be pressure springs and valves flying around my garage and spending the rest of the day failing to find them. Is there anything to be aware of when I remove the bung and filter? Many thanks Michael

Dave Allen
Nothing to worry about, the plate has the bung on it and the gauze sits behind it. There should be about 1 1/2 ltrs in sump. On refilling i put 1ltr into the the sump in the usual way and about 6ltrs in through the oil tank. ps don't over tighten the allen bolt as it goes into aluminium. HTH

Jason Plato
you need to remove the hose that is marked as OUT from the sump . some comes out of the gauze hole but not all .
