strongy
I am a novice mechanic. I am about to replace the alternator on my 1700ss, the belt looks to me as if it only runs the water pump and the alternator - can anyone confirm this. How is the timing controlled on an x-flow engine?(I am only used to looking at OHC engines with external timing belts) Will I affect anything by replacing the alternator. Thanks to everyone for all of their previous advice - very helpful for a new (very happy) owner.
Big Brother
Strongy, The fan belt drives the alternator and the water pump from the crank. It is OK to change as it has nothing to do with the engine timing. To adjust the timing the distributor needs to be unclamped and rotated. The timing on a crossflow is driven by a chain - this is inside the timing cover just under the waterpump. It is not visible unless you remove the cover. Changing the fan belt is pretty straight foward and does not involve touching the timing chain or dizy. Just check you tighten up the alternator bolts afterwards. Crossflows have a habit of trying to rid themselves of alternators 😬 Steve Se7en-Up! Less is more!
